Hi Folks,

Well I took the plunge and ordered a Mac Pro with the 8800GT card. Originally it was due to arrive around the 3rd March, which then changed to the 19th Feb and now just checked its with UPS for delivery TODAY :)

Looking forward to having a play with something new and trying to finally break my PC upgrade addiction ;)

I ordered on the 4th Feb so very lucky with it coming so quick. I just ordered some more ram for it to take it to 10GB

The 667 memory does work, but I've managed to get UK sourced memory for £380 delivered which is 4 x 2GB stick + the 2 x 1GB out the box.

I'm feed up with PCs but do a fair amount of work with Virtual Machines so thats what the memory is for.

Oh and it arrived at 8.30 this morning, just not had a chance yet to clear enough space in my study to unbox it.

I'll also be using a 27" Dell monitor with it.

and why exactly would anybody want to stick a loaf on bread inside a brand new Mac Pro?? It might be ok for cars but come on a computer??????

Can I just clarify... Are you putting 667MHz RAM in your NEW Mac Pro that takes 800MHz? Or did I read that wrong, and the "but" in your post suggested that you are in fact putting 800MHz in there? If you are putting 667MHz in there... why? Why not get 800MHz RAM, it is available, I got some in mine!

Ok, I replying to somebody earlier who was talking about the 667 Ram and that the 800 wasn't about much.

I've got hold of 8GB worth of 800Mhz which should be with me Friday, I was tempted to go down the 667 route purely on a cost basis, but in the end decided I might as well spend the extra few £££ (its not like I haven't spent a small fortune already) and get the 800 stuff.

I've finally managed to get a few mins to clear some room so will be unboxing in a few minutes and then will post some pictures up.

ok I'll stop being so tetchy ;)

Well its installed and running...ohhhhh shiny :) and other than the hard drive seek noise, its silent.

Not sure how I feel about the wireless keyboard, for some reason I missed the fact they'd lopped the keypad bit off of it, do like the feel thou its much nicer than the old style one. Might have to pop into town and get the usb version and flog the wireless one. The mouse is also a bit different, but may chuck my G7 in an see how I get on with that.

Software updates are applying now and Firefox is on so will post some pictures shortly

I did on the Mini which "converted" me the "Way of the Mac" I personally prefer Firefox and its not exactly running slowly :)

..and finally

So how much did you spend in the end and whats the final spec of the system? just HOW will you ever cope with a 1 button mouse ? :(, I had ago of a mac yesterday in pc world, the 1 button mouse just ruined me,lol

The final spec will be when the memory arrives and I shift all my drives across

2 x Quad 2.8 Xeons
10GB Ram
8800GT
2 x 500GB SATA
1 x 360GB SATA
1 x 160GB SATA
1 Super Drive
Wireless keyboard (may swap to wired, missing th keypad already)
Wireless Mouse (May swap to my logitech G7)

Total cost excluding stuff I already had will be around the 2K mark, which for a machine of this spec and the fact thats its silent (I love silent...one of the big things that was annoying me about PCs) doesn't seem to be too bad at all. I also got the 3 year warranty so I intend to hang on to it for a while.

I had that 2 years ago, and last year with a new Baby :)

I'm hooked, its a great bit of kit and does everything I want. The Mini took about a week to convert me to MAC OS X...Just need to flog my entire PC and all its bits and the spare etc.

This might cost me more to start with but in the medium term it'll save me money as I'll stop buying tons of PC bits and then changing them and then changing again etc etc

Its a pitty a mac is just a pc with OSX installed on it :CRYS: , thats how apple mac money, OSX is just freeBSD with a fancy front end, mac hardware is pc's in posh boxes.

Since the late 1980's apple hasnt done anything innovative what so ever, they ARE however masters of marketing and fashion and user interfaces, I wonder how much 2 quad cores and mainboard is seperatly for a pc.
