So my Macbook Pro decided to die yesterday (what a way to start the week) and whilst waiting for it to be fixed I needed to get something to work on. A short walk to my local Apple reseller here in Moscow and I came home with one of the new dual processor Mac Pros (for a king's ransom though). Wow it's quick, quite scary actually.

Anyway to try and save some money (you may laugh, the import prices and luxury tax here in Moscow is quite scary) I want to order some more hard drives to pick up when I'm next in the UK.

I'm looking for a couple of 1TB drives, what do people recommend these days then? It's been a while since I've bought a hard drive so I'm a bit out the loop.

Western Digital and Samsung seem to be highly rated in the 1TB storage space.

My personal recommendation would be a Western Digital drive though.

Depends on your budget. The Samsung F1 is still phenomenal value and represents a very good deal. If you can afford a little more then the WD Black drives would be my choice.

Given the price I can pay in Russia for these drives, price isn't really an issue. Thanks all the advice.

Just out of curiosity, how do the prices compare to the UK?

Very expensive.

I bought a 2x2.26 Ghz Xeon Mac Pro (6 GB RAM, 640GB hard drive) stock edition for just over £3300 here. In the UK that version retails for around £2500. For smaller accessories (external hard drives etc.) the price difference is even worse. Earlier this year I bought a 1TB Western Digital MyBook for nearly £400.

Some things are easy to bring back from the UK but in the end if you're in a hole and need it right now you need to pay what they charge.

Yikes! £400 for a MyBook!

Now I understand why Moscow is considered as the most expensive city in the world.

Oh I know, new Mac LED 24" screen > £1000, you get the drift quite quickly!

Even in these 'crisis' times money just walks out the door.

Not to take a 'non Mac' tangent but I was at dinner on Friday night and they had a humour based 'crisis' wine menu! It went from £200 to £4000 a bottle! Oh the Russians they know when to laugh!
