My gf is looking to get new laptop and im trying my best to persuade her to get a wee macbook - its just for college stuff, surfing, office apps etc so spec isn't that important really so im thinking of getting her the middle spec one with 2gb RAM.

I know these have been updated recently but what are the likely updates for june? Any speedbumps wouldn't make any difference for her usage requirements but things like multitouch could be cool. Anything else worth waiting on?

Her current laptop is currently messing up big time so will more than likely order soon rather than wait but wanted to check with the pros on here.

Thanks!

Just order it now.

They could be updated around the WWDC in June, but these would be small updates such as a processor update.

I think so too. A small chip bump will not be of any concern as I have said and I wouldn't be expecting new models or anything. Multitouch likely to be added? Again its probably something she won't use but im just curious!

If it's just for basic stuff, surely the cheapest one makes more sense? You can get 2GB of compatible RAM for £22 or so.

Cheers for that. I think the length of the wait would be too much considering that any bumps won't be noticeable for her required usage. Will tell her to order ASAP then. Is it worth going for the Applecare?

I wanted bigger hard disk and RAM so it made more sense to go for the middle spec one. Might be using parallels on it for her windows apps she needs so it made sense.

I just got one for my wife, who has used XP for years, but has taken really well to OSX and loves the little macbook now.

Great laptop.

I went for the cheapest spec and added 2Gb RAM and a 160Gb hard disk. I decided to go for Applecare.

I might upgrade to a MBP in a few weeks.

Parallels works fine.

3 year hardware warranty is included on HE purchases. They'll try and flog you an upgrade to for 3 years software support, but you can (and probly should) say no.

Is it worth getting Applecare for this? Can someone please clarify that you get a three year warranty as standard with an HE purchase?

Yes you do get a 3 year warranty, I got the guy in the Apple store to scan the barcode when I sent mine in for repair and it was a 3-year warranty. You do not have to bother paying for extra warranty even though you can, it's included but not very well documented.

I persuaded my girlfriend to get one for her birthday last year and she now hates Windows. I've recently upgraded the hard drive in it to 160GB for her as it only came with a 60GB. I would check how much Apple are charging for the 2GB of memory and large hard drive, they are generic computer components so it might be worth ordering a low spec one and doing the upgrades yourself. When I bought my MacBook I ordered it with 512MB of RAM because Apple wanted over £200 for 2GB so I ordered it myself for about £100 (it costs under £30 now), it was so easy to fit. I know prices have changed since I bought mine so check to see if your getting a good deal.

just ordered it and told the guy I was ordering on behalf of my gf who is a student and he asked for proof of being a student. Was surprised that they even asked as I thought it was meant to be easy to blag it! She is a student so there is no issue but was surprised nonetheless.

Depends where you buy from. In-store they'll ask for proof. Mate of mine who works for a college bought an MBP from the Trafford Centre and they asked for ID.

The HE Apple Store on the internet can only be accessed from University networks which makes it easier to police.
