Hi all,

Receiving my new MacBook Pro soon and a problem occurred to me today. I use iTunes to purchase and listen to my music, after I have logged into iTunes on my new MacBook with my current account, will it give me the option to re-download all my purchased music or will I have to back it all up first? Will my purchased playlist transfer also?

Thanks. :)

Will have to transfer it. Copy your purchased playlist (assuming you have one) to your new Mac and enter your details.

Just move across the entire iTunes folder and you should be good to go.

Yep. You can authorise up to five machines to play the music on your account. Will ask for the logon details to associate the account with the new Mac when you first play a protected iTunes track.

PC to Mac is possible too, but there's a bit of fiddling involved.

Look inside My Music/iTunes for the "iTunes Library" file, copy it over and get rid of any extension it may have.

It's been so long since I moved mine over, the library file I'm using started life on a PC five years ago :), I can't quite remember which files I had to move.

Oh, I'm sure song ratings are kept in the file as metadata, so if worse comes to worse you'll at least retain them.

I did this going from a PC to a Mac and I had to manually tweak one of the xml files so that the paths matched, can't remember exactly what the file was but it worked perfectly. I found it from a google search so the info is out there.

I did this the other day, all i did was in iTunes i backed up everything via file and backup, i think. Then it asked me for a few blank dvd's. After burning them i put them onto my imac and it worked a treat, no hassle at all.

If I remember correctly, when backing up/restoring via CD/DVD, iTunes will not backup/restore the play counts and ratings.

Can't Restore my Backup

I've recently had my Laptop re-commissioned, (reformatted and XP restored to it) so prior to this I did a backup of my Itunes library using file\export library, thinking I should be able to reinstall Itunes then restore it. The backup I did was to a network drive and the resultant file was library.xml.

The problem I have is I can't see any way to restore it. I've even tried copying it to CD but Itunes still doesn't restore it.

I've still got my music on my IPhone 3G but synching fails to load them into the new library. I believe this is because you are only allowed to have one ITunes library due to Apple's paranoia over copyright. In Itunes the songs are shown but greyed out and there are no album covers shown in "Music".

Furthermore when I first synch'd with the new library it said there were new applications on the IPhone which if I didn't synch them they would be removed from the IPhone; so I synche'd them...and several apps were removed including one that I had purchased which contained my secret info, passwords etc.

ITunes has to be the worst piece of crap I've ever had the misfortune to use. Phone, good...ITunes, looks good but actually rubbish, .:mad::mad: but unfortunately there is no alternative so any help with getting the backup restored and ITunes working again would be gratefully received. :)
