Hi all,

Bought a macbook which arrived yesterday.
Left it asleep overnight and this morning I opened the lid and although the drive made a noise, no display. Pressed some random buttons (space, esc etc) but no better. Tapped the power button but nothing so I held down the power (fool that I am).
Now when I turn it on I get to the grey screen with 2 beeps, followed by 3 beeps. Just keeps beeping three times after that.
I've reset the PRAM and the power manager but still doing the same.

Any ideas? Have I killed my new baby? :(

TIA

Did you update your MacBook to 10.5.2? I had this almost 15seconds of "blank" when I restarted my MacBook the second time (after first restart after update). I panicked but didn't press any power button, it came on after then.

Those beeps sounds like a HDD fault to me - I had that problem when I install a new 120GB HDD but solved it after readjusting it. It sounds like it but don't necessarily is.

Have you got your system backed up?

Yes I did update to 10.5.2 but I have used it since. I can't swear that I've rebooted it since the initial reboot though.
I haven't changed the hardware at all but I guess it could be a dodgy batch.

I haven't backed it up, but nothing on there yet really.
If all else fails I'll use the disk.

Well, sounds like during that "blank" phase, you powered it off and now the HDD seem to have fail. If you can boot from the DVD, best thing is to boot from it and see if you can use Disk utility to varify / validate the HDD.

Sorry, this problem seem to have gone beyond my knowledge - something must have gone wonky during that reboot (firmwire / software / Boot controller e.t.c.) Your best bet is either a more learned forum help or call Apple / visit the Genius bar today to get it sorted (as it's new, you've got the phone and warranty to cover)

A hassle unfortunately.

Yeah still confused.
I have two 1Gb sticks from my iMac which work fine in the Macbook.
I also have two 256Mb sticks which work fine in the Macbook.
The two 512Mb sticks work in my iMac but not in the Macbook. Very strange.
