Looks like Apple are getting the online store ready for new MacBooks. Its down at the moment and that usually means updates. Its been rumored that new MacBook Pros will be out today.

Guess all we can do is wait and see.

I think it is the MacBook Pros that are being updated to a C2D chip.

Great, more hardware to lust after. :D

Yeah when I said "new" MacBook Pros I didnt mean a whole new machine but just upgrades, loads of rumors of C2D, bigger HDs, FW 800 and stuff like that.

I kind of wish they did bring out a new form factor for the Pros though.

Cant imagine this being anything more than the C2D chips - anything major would be done at a Conference on stage.

It's official! Core 2 Duo MacBook Pros!

Details: http://www.apple.com/uk/macbookpro/

Edit: No apparent changes to the MacBooks (thank goodness, mine isn't obselete yet!) other than a little reshuffle of the store design.

Changes to the MacBook Pros include double the memory as standard, more storage as standard and the inclusion of a Firewire 800 port. Buyers can choose between a 2.13GHz and 2.33GHz Intel Core 2 Duo chip on the 15" model or just a 2.33GHz on the 17"

I was considering a black macbook with a gig of ram and a 120gig hd but now im sorely tempted by a stock 15" one which wont be much more plus i'll be getting either one with the edu discount. just gotta decide if its better to buy the pro since ive been using small laptops for ages now and i have a tiny 8.9" tablet pc arriving tomorrow.

Look really good value now compared to similar windows machines. Although I won't consider buying one until they offer a 1680*1050 screen on the 15inch version or a 1920*1200 screen on the 17inch version.

Im longing for an ipod video, but if i get the new one out now i will be gutted when the touchscreen one comes out...gonna have to resist for a few months.

1.) Ever since the Intel switchover macs have been incredibly good value compared to similar Windows machines. Coupled with the excellent operating system, the included applications and the ability to run Windows alongside OS X it's been a no-brainer for quite a while now.

2.) 1680x1050 on a 15" and 1920x1200 on a 17" is just ridiculous. Those are resolutions currently found in 20" and 24" widescreen monitors. You wouldn't be able to see a thing — it would be useless having that amount of screen real estate on your lap. If you want a super-high resolution display, just buy an external monitor and hook it up to that. I can't see screen resolutions evolving the way you are suggesting anytime soon...

But anyway, I know what I'll be getting come next year when my MacBook is old-hat :D

Edit: Just had a look at a certain gaming computer manufacturer, and it appears they are doing laptops with the aforementioned resolutions. What a totally ridiculous waste of money — who in their right mind wants the resolution of a 24" widescreen monitor crammed into a 17" laptop? I wouldn't touch it with a bargepole.

After doing a lot of cutting and pasting from the apple website ive made a text file comparing specs, dimensions and price between the macnook and the pro, both with specs that i like and the crux comes down to this -

Price (standard edu off campus discount)
13.3-inch Macbook - £1,255.14
15-inch Macbook - £1,794.23

Obviously those prices will be lower via the on campus only website, but still its nearly a 600 quid diff between them, although i do get a faster processor, an extra gig of ram, decent graphics on the pro. Which one would you guys go for?

Get some eyes then, the 1920x1200 in my m1710 is amazing, makes my 19" vx924 look like a p.o.s.
i personally dont have room for a 24" widescreen laptop, a nice high def screen in a small area makes things crisp. :)
With oled on the advance things are going to move this way, http://www.dailytech.com/article.aspx?newsid=4603 for example
you seriously need to try out the compacted res', they are very good.

gib786, i would go for the 15", no contest.

MacBook, I see more value in it. I like it 13.3", makes transport SO much more easier - fits snuggly in my rugsack to Uni lectures. (I don't use it in class, I use it between class when I bookworm my revision in the library.)

But that's just me, with a tight pocket and no gaming in mind.
