I have just completed a Linux Install of my Dual Xeon which i bought on this very forum. They are currently running Ubuntu 7.04. I have install the Linux client installed via finstall. I am a complete linux n00b, and feel quite pleased with myself, as this is just up and running, and also as a samba file server on my home network. Couple of questions though.

1. I find linux very jagged, and laggy when im trying to run it, im wondering if its the graphics card - its an AGP Geforce2 MX400 (32mb). Would upgrading this help?
2. The Xeons are only getting around 50ppd on each core (4 cores with the HT) = 200ppd. Is this right? It doesnt sound it. What could i have done wrong? Or, how can i optimise it?

Full spec - 2 x Prestonia Xeons (Running currently at 2.2Ghz each) on a PCH-DL with 2gb RAM all running off a 40gb hard drive and Geforce 2 MX400 32mb.

This is in addition to my stock E2160 HTPC (Which rarely gets used for that) which folds 24/7 Windows SMP. And my main rig (Sig Spec), which folds when im on it around 5 hours per day average.

This lot gives me about 1100PPD, so im coming for the front page . . . . :D

I'm guessing your using the standard linux clients on the linux box?

With 4 logical cores you could swap to running 2 SMP clients (or perhaps just 1 SMP client, I don't know which would get you more points TBH with your setup) SMP clients on a native linux install would net you way more than 200ppd.

I think you need to install a Linux driver for the graphic card as the default one is v basic. I only notice a problem on start up & can't be bothered to do it myself.

Do Prestonia's support EM64T? My knowledge of Xeons is next to nothing but you'll need the 64-bit stuff to run the linux SMP.

Mine too. I dont have the foggiest idea either, but looks like finding that out is the next task. The graphics drivers is installed via the restricted drivers enabler. Think ill have to go asking on some linux forums.
