Hi everyone,

I'm building a new gaming machine and I've pretty much got all the specs sorted out except the case, although im still unsure of whether i should get i7, I will be Oc the q6600.This will be my first gaming machine build. :D

At the moment the specs are:
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 2.40GHz (1066FSB)
Asus P5Q Pro Intel P45 (Socket 775)
OCZ Blade 4GB (2x2GB) DDR2 PC2-6400C4 Dual Channel
2 Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 4890( Crossfire)
OCZ ModXStream Pro 700w PSU
Samsung SpinPoint F1 RAID 320GB SATA-II 16MB Cache

Any case which will hold all of these components snuggly is good for me, don't mind if its large better for future upgrading. All suggestions are valued. ;),sorry if i missed anything out. :)

Thanks,

Hey,

What size is your current monitor, as it might be worth you getting a 4870X2 since OCUK have an amazing price on these £248. Lastly what's your budget?

Currently the Q6600s are overpriced and pointless. The choise for a C2Q are really a Q6700 or a Q9550 or getting an i7 920 D0.

From what you have posted and also depending on your budget, there are a couple of changes that I would make:-

  • Swap the Q6600 for a Q6700.
  • Swap the PSU for a Zalman/BeQuiet 600/650.
  • Swap the pair of 4890s for the 4870X2
  • If overclocking you would need an aftermarket cooler, such as this Titan Fenrir

Case wise, are you looking for cooling performance, or a sleek and subtle case? You can't really go wrong with cases, all done to individual choice, my current favourite is the Silverstone Fortress.

----------------------

If you are wanting to go i7 then you would be mad not to get this, cheaper than if you bought the components separately and comes with a guaranteed overclock!

*OVERCLOCKED* Intel Core i7 920 D0 Stepping (SLBEJ) 2.66Ghz @ 4.00GHz / Gigabyte EX58-UD5 Intel X58 Motherboard / Kingston HyperX 6GB 12800C9 1600MHz DDR3 Bundle

Thanks for the quick response, A friend recommended the q6600 to me, i thought it was quite expensive compared to the capabilities of an i7, the reason i wanted to get 2 4890s were from various extensive benchmark tests bringing that trumps over the 295 GTX lastly my budget ranges 1000-2000GBP(pound sign doesn't work on my current pc :p)

Edit: My current monitor is a 22 inch samsung cant remember which resolution/model, in a few weeks i will be upgrading to a 30 inch monitor

The Q6600 was and still is a brilliant chip, however now it doesn't make sense to buy it new when the faster Q6700 2.66Ghz is £35 odd less. Well based on your budget, I'd go with the i7 bundle with either the 4870X2 (95% as quick as a GTX295 for £100 less) or Xfire 4890s, with a case a reasonable cooling of your choice.

The Q6700 is faster and cheaper - the 6600 just has a good reputation.

The 6600 was a good buy when it hit £100, for current prices it's just an average chip - you'd get better performance for less cash with an AMD 940BE or even a 720BE, the 720 nearly matches the 6600 for performance, especially in gaming, and is £30 cheaper before you even look at the motherboard.

The Antec 1200 looks most likely to be purchased :D, Lian-Li style 1200 is too huge for my liking lol, second contender would be the Coolermaster RC-1000 Cosmos Silent Full Tower Case - Black (No PSU)

This has used Most of your Budget, but includes a Brilliant Case, and full water cooling. I only choose this case because the Black one with the window isn’t in stock or even listed anymore. I chose the Retail version of the CPU, as it is only ~£5 more and has a game and longer warranty with it. And I THINK the HD4870 water block works with the 4890. I just included 10 barbs as a rough number; I don’t know how many it will need. And you will have to get the Coolant from somewhere else as there is none listed. I know Quite a few things on the list are out of stock, but this is a rough guide for a Top dollar water-cooled PC. Also the Water-cooling items will probably need rethinking, as I’m not an expert at water-cooling.

Thanks,

To add to Ripped's spec:-

I would add some extra fans to use on the rads, and to double check whether a 4870 block will fit a 4890, swap the paste for MX-2 (similar temps if not better, easier to spread and doesn't have a 'bedding in period').

Apart from:
*OVERCLOCKED* Intel Core i7 920 D0 Stepping (SLBEJ) 2.66Ghz @ 4.00GHz / Gigabyte EX58-UD5 Intel X58 Motherboard / Kingston HyperX 6GB 12800C9 1600MHz DDR3 Bundle
