New media build seem to be having an issue with the resolution

Hi guys just finished off a new media pc and installed Vista all went ok, but when I installed all the chipset drivers and went to display settings to increase the resolution it was set at 800 x 600 when I dragged the slide bar to the right it seems to work though when I go back to desktop I cant see the icons that were present before. they seemed to be pushed to the left and righthand side of the screen, is this a setting on my LCD I need to change or is it from the PC,,

Spec
Asus M3N78-VM NVIDIA 8200 (Socket AM2+) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard
AMD Athlon 64 X2 4850e 2.5GHz Socket AM2 Energy Efficient 1MB L2 Cache
On Board Graphics
Samsung LE26R87BDX 26 Inch HD Ready (1366x768 Screen Resolution )
Kingston HyperX 4GB (2x2GB) DDR2 PC2-6400C5 800MHz Dual Channel Kit
Seagate 500G
Antec Fusion Media Case
Windows Vista Hom Premium

I'd check the TV is set to 16:9 widescreen.

Then also check the display driver to set up the display device as 720p HDTV rather than just changing the resolution with the slider.
