Hi I'm new to these forums but since I have (and will continue to do so) bought loads of stuff from OCs I thought this was the right place to post this.

I'm about to build a new media centre pc for the living room. Never done this before, here is my spec, what are your thought please?

Samsung SpinPoint T HD501LJ 500GB SATA-II 16MB Cache - OEM £58.99

Microsoft Remote Keyboard for Windows XP Media Center Edition - OEM (ZV7-00007) £24.99

Zalman CNPS8000 Ultra Quiet Low Profile (Socket 754/939/940/775/AM2) CPU Cooler £24.99

GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC5300C4 667MHz Value DDR2 Dual Channel Kit (GX22GB5300DC) £45.99

Intel Core 2 Duo E6420 "LGA775 Conroe" 2.13GHz (1066FSB) - Retail £107.99
Abit IL9 Pro (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard £45.99

Samsung SH-183LBEBN 18x18 DVD±RW Dual Layer Serial ATA Lightscribe ReWriter (Black) - OEM £16.99

Hauppauge WinTV Nova-T-500 Dual Freeview TV Tuner £46.99

...

Due to space restrictions I am restricted to depth and I've only found a couple of cases that will do the job, SilverStone is my favourite. Unfortunately OC does not sell this item or the silent graphics card:

SilverStone LC04B-A300W + 300w PSU (BLACK) Aluminum Desktop case (inc PSU) £100ish

Silverstone RC02 PCI-E Rider for LC02/LC04 Cases £14ish

512MB Gigabyte 7600GS PCI-E Mem 800MHz GPU 500MHz 12Pipes D-Sub/Dual Link DVI-I/HDTV SLi Silent-Pipe £55ish

All in all that's about £550.

Any thoughts or suggestions please. I do not want to spend more money but ultimately I want to build a machine that will last a few years, run Vista media centre and run quietly.

PS OC's keep up the good work, your site is by far the best and easiest to use

Ditch the MS keyboard, it's IR and rubbish. I have the Keysonic keyboard/trackpad and it's pretty good (2.4ghz wireless too)

Personally wouldn't bother with slimline cases and riser cards, go for Antec NSK2400 or Fusion, or another HTPC that's similar (that's MATX btw) Also that Silverstone PSU is non standard.

You don't need 2GB, if using XP. Go for 8500GT, it has H265 video acceleration. About the same price as 7600GS

Thanks squiffy,

Good idea about keyboard.

I'm restricted to 300mm depth maximum which is the same as a standard DVD player etc hence the reason for case. Although I have ok height at 300mm.

Perhaps I'll get the case without power supply, any ideas for a silent power supply?

Memory is pretty cheap so not a problem going for 2GB.

Excellent idea for graphics card and H265. Both Asus and Gigbyte do a silent version.
