Hi im Jake.

I have been scouting around on this site for a while and thought it was about time to join in and learn some more things about computer before i bought one and realised i had made a mistake.

I was hoping someone could give me some advice on what would be best or what the best options would be to build or buy a computer.
The computer is mainly going to be for gaming, if anyone would have any opinions or help would be interested to know.

My budget would be looking at about £1200 but if you think that i wouldnt need that much for it or a little more could go a long way i would be listening.

Thank you in advance
Jake

First question would be what do you plan to use it for?

assuming gaming
At a rough guess your looking at something like an I7 3770k and a 680 or 7950/70 which will play crysis3 on ultra or there abouts. your big question would be do you want 1 monitor with a high res or 3D or both or do you want to go for a 3 display setup. both are within your budget but its a matter of taste.

IMHO you should consider buying second-hand. Have a good look at specs see what your requirements are. I wouldnt get too stuck into getting the latest and greatest tech. By the time that you gear arrives on your doorstep its already on its way to being outdated. See if you can get yourself a 2ndH decent set up to play with before you start dropping big money... my 2p worth.

I would say however that Haswell is due to be launched in June so may be worth holding off for the extra 7-14% power they have but it depends when your planning to build.

the next round of GPU's are not due until the end of the year so not worth waiting for them.

Dont forget an SSD

3570k and a nice 7950 will do nicely. I'll spec you something up quick.

Can crossfire in the future, and can change the case, I picked that one as the budget allowed for a pricey case. Includes very very good hardware and will do you nicely.

You can switch the case to something different and add/change for a 3770k if you wanted for example.

Depends if you need display, keyboard, OS. But yeah, worth waiting a little bit imo.

Your money will still be good. :) Else, you'd be looking at a 3570K / 3770K, Z77, 8 / 16GB, CPU cooler, 550W PSU, a 7950 / 7970, SSD + 1TB hard drive, a sub £100 case. That should round it up nicely.

Thought I would pop in and say welcome, for that kind of price you will get a beast system.

£120 for a case, I like the idea of the H100i cooler, heard good things about it, so as long as your case has x2 120mm fan mounts on the top its good, or pick another cooler.

I went with the black/blue look, no idea why, just ended up like that :D

couple of things - think of how it's going to look in your room.

Don't buy a black case, a black keyboard, a wood table, a grey mouse and black monitor. make a colour scheme and stick to it! you will be x10 happier with your neat and tidy area if it isn't heavy on the eyes and this doesn't cost.

if you can't get what you want exactly, get near to it, and modify the rest (don't be afraid, it's not hard)

Don't think about buying future proof items. In the computer world, everything changes too fast to even think about that. Get your build, be happy with it and then over time, think about treating yourself to more ram, add another gpu or some watercooling, try not to replace so much, try to add to.

look at other peoples builds for inspiration :)
