Hello,

Having been following the R9 290X threads and having a pre order in place I thought I would say hello and ask for some advice on my new build, as I have been out of this scene for a little while.

My current PC;
Antec P180
Asus Crosshair III Formula
965BE & Thermalright UltraExtreme 120
16Gb DDR3 1600Mhz CL7 Corsair Ballistix
OCZ RevoDrive 128Gb
EVGA GTX295
Dell 2405FPW 24" 1200p
Auzentech Prelude
Thermaltake 750W PSU

Current thoughts for my new build;
Continue to use the Antec P180
Asus Sabertooth V3
FX8320 and transfer the HSF
Transfer 16Gb DDR3 1600Mhz CL7 Corsair Ballistix
Upgrade monitor to a 27" 1440p or 30" 1600p
MSI R9 290X BF4, and a second when the non BF4 are available
Transfer Auzentech Prelude
New SSD boot drive
New SSD storage drive
New 1Kw PSU

Peripherals;
Logitech G27
Logitech G13
Logitech G15
Logitech Z5500

Thoughts/questions;

Would the HSF be sufficient to cool an OC'd FX as I was considering adding a second 120mm fan for push/pull?

The Antec can accept a number of 120mm fans, 1 x top, 1 x rear above graphics card, 1 x bottom front, 1 x middle front, and 1 x infront of the PSU in the bottom centre of the case. With this number of cases, does anyone know a particular fan which has a good air flow / noise compromise and whether you think this would provide sufficient cooling?

I can do my own research on SSD's but if any jump out as being the ones to watch out for that someone can point me in the right direction to start from that would be great.

Is a 1Kw PSU going to be enough to drive a second 290X if I upgrade?

Overall what do you think of the component selection, and is there anything else I need to consider before I purchase

Thanks,
Chris

Fairly sure the Thermalright Ultra 120 eXtreme is still one of the best air cooling heatsinks. At the very least you should see if it can keep up with an OC'd FX8320 before thinking about replacing it, IMO.

Samsung SSD 840 EVO 250GB seems like the best buy to me, based on quality, performance and price. If you want a 5 year warranty then I think the SSD 840 Pro 256GB is the one to go for.

290X draw about 320W under full (Furmark type) loads. Gaming typical loads seem to be about 250W. So I think a high quality 1KW unit will have plenty of 'headroom' to spare for a system with two 290Xs, even when overclocked reasonably.

I see a Logitech fan :D

What sort of budget would you be looking at, and would you not want to go for an Intel build?

Hello everyone,

Thanks for your suggestions. Yes, I am a Logitech fan, is that such a bad thing? I also missed out the MX Revolution I have too!

Not withstanding the cost of a monitor then I would be looking at a budget of about £700 to £800, and the cost of a second 290X on top of this.

I forgot how expensive all this upgrading can be, but I want to set my self up for another good few years before the next major overhaul and I want to have a good comprise of price and performance as I can't really justify moving to Intel CPU's as this would stretch my budget too far.

What £50 more for the 4670 too much for you?

Unless you're planning on going crazy with the ocs on the CPU and GPUs plus have hundreds of HDDs, a 850w will be enough so you can put the money towards the Intel CPU.

4670k £169.99, 4770k £239.99
Gigabyte z87-oc £158.99

Can go for a cheaper xfire capable mobo if want/don't like the orange colour.
