OK... I've just installed BOINC, joined the OcUK team, and the SETI@home project. So far it's just running on the dual-core 2.5GHz Athlon CPU (I know, it won't break any records, so nobody needs to worry about being parped :) ). It says time remaining is 19hr 12 mins on both of the "setiathome_enhanced" tabs....

I guess now I just leave it running in the background?

Never done this before so does it sound like I did it right? :)

Just leave it running in the background and it will be OK. The estimated time is just that - an estimated time. As you crunch your way through workunits that will gradually become more accurate as BOINC learns about your machine and adjusts the time accordingly.
If your machine gets too hot or too slow while you are using it, you can always adjust how much of your cpu it uses by going to Advanced/Preferences in the boinc client. I have boinc running on my laptop and have it set to use 50% of my cpu's and 50% cpu time so that it doesn't get too hot.
If you have an nvidia gpu, you can also use that, or if you have an ati card (58xx, 48xx, 38xx), you can use that for Milkyway@home for some serious point per day). There is an OCUK team for that as well :D
GPU crunching is a little bit more fiddly, and you have to turn it on or off when playing games as well, so if you are not too sure, just leave it for now and it can be something you can look at later if you like..
Seti shut their servers down from Tue to Fri, so you might want to set your cache to 3 days to give yourself enough work to last, it is set to 0.25 days by default - it depends on how long your rig is turned on for each day

got some stuff to do now, but I will post back later with instructions on how to install the optimised apps for seti if someone doesn't beat me to it as that will give your credit a nice increase for the same amount of effort

That machine is on about 6-12 hours a day... for most of which it's just used as a HTPC. It has an ATI HD4670 GPU, although that's generally in use when watching TV I suppose... I wonder if it's possible to use a fraction of the GPU's power and leave enough for watching most video?

But you need to get the radeon on Milkyway@home NOW :D , ATI no good for SETI
 
OK... I joined the Milkyway@home project.... but it seems to have caused one of the two SETI work units to have stopped... so I guess it's using the CPU and not the GPU...

I says that the MilkyWay work unit will be done in about 4.5 hours...

If you want it to just use the ATI GPU if you go to you account page for Milkyway in the 'Preferences for this project' there are options to use CPU, use Nvidia GPU & ATI GPU. Choose which ever fits best. Probly no to the first 2 and yes to the last. Hopr that helps ;)

You might need to do the reverse in the seti account page although it only has a use GPU tab not an individual ATI/Nvidia one.

Ok Stickman - if you haven't already installed the optimised apps, you want to go to the following page and download the relevant app for yor system

Run the program and on the applications page you want to

select astropulse - longer 24hr wu's but you get a lot of credit (deselect if you dont want them)
Select Multibeam and choose SSE3_AMD
Dont worry about the Multibeam CUDA as you dont have an nvidia card

Then just click through the other pages and restart boinc and you are good to go.

If you want to check, download CPU-Z which will tell you what your cpu supports, but off the top of my head I think your athlon will do SSE3

Thanks. Should I uninstall BOINC before installing those, or just stop it running for a while?

Also, am thinking of seeing how they run on an i5 430M laptop with an Nvidia GT330M... do you know what would be the best apps for that one?

just stop boinc and you will be OK

the laptop will run them fine, use the same program but check using CPU-Z what your processor will support, I think you can use SSSE3 or SSE4.1 Intel apps and then tick the multibeam cuda and choose the non vlar kill option as seti are testing not sending vlar apps to the gpu.
I have a 230M gpu and wu's take an hour or a bit under, but it does get hot so be careful and limit how much cpu you use...
 
After I installed the optimised Win64 Lunatics' Unified Installer v0.36 on the laptop, I ran boinc again and noticed the task that was running on the GPU had stopped with the message "computation error."

Am I supposed to still be running BOINC once I've installed that new optimised app, or has that app put a new executable somewhere that I'm supposed to be running instead? Or maybe my GPU drivers aren't recent enough? BOINC finds them as:

19/07/2010 11:12:39 NVIDIA GPU 0: GeForce GT 330M (driver version 18829, CUDA version 2020, compute capability 1.2, 1024MB, 121 GFLOPS peak)

edit: ok I got the GPU task working in BOINC again by reinstalling the Lunatics thing with the option for older nvidia drivers like I have (don't get the 30% performance boost but uses slightly less VRAM, or so it says) :)

One funny thing I notice is CPU-Z reports my socket type as LGA1156
