New Memory

In about a months time ill be buying a new pc and im currently looking at the memory options available to me. Is it possible, to connect 2, 2gb sticks or 4, 1gb sticks onto a mobo to attain 4gb?

Also, what will I have to look for in terms of memory compatability with the mobo?
