So I'm looking to upgrade from 27" 1080p to 27" 1440p. I would have liked to go with the Nvidia route with G-Sync monitor and 980 or 980ti but my budget just won't allow that.

I'm looking at a 390 or a 390X to go along with a Asus MG278Q (TN) or the MG279Q (IPS).
Should I save money and go 390? Should I go IPS or TN? The advantage of the TN panel is the Freesync range is 40-144hz whilst the IPS is only 35-90hz.

Would go with the 390 for now and wait for polaris. Also would avoid any of the current freesync IPS-monitors going by the threads over at overclock.net (one of my friends had to exchange his MG279Q thee times in order to get a decent one and remember than almost none of the retailers let you return your monitor because of backlight bleed!). Would recommend waiting for HDR monitors instead and upgrade once polaris is released.

I have heard of the various issues with the IPS model, was hoping I get lucky. But the 390 and TN screen does also bring in a nice £ saving.

go with the 390X, i have a 290x that just about get gaming quality at 1440, i see drops to around 40 FPS in BF4 on ultra.

Yea I picked up a 390X in the end. Still haven't bought a monitor yet, will use my current one for now.
What about Nvidia 970 and a 1080p TN g-sync ?
I thought about that, but when spending £800 I thought I better upgrade to 1440p and not stay at 1080p like my current monitor. Don't know if it's the correct decision, but it's the one I ended up making.
