New mobo - how best to backup and restore

Hi folks

I'll soon be changing to a new mobo. I've got a 2TB UDB HDD on the way to backup everything. I'm a little confused though and need some help. Here's what I want to do:

1. Install all the new components
2. Fresh Windows install (I'm aware of activation requirements)
3. To restore all programs and files as they were.

What's the best way of going about this?
