I recently upgraded my motherboard to an H77M-D3H and the Via VT2021 audio on it is very poor in comparison to Realtek ALC887 that was on my H61M-D3V - it just doesnt have the bass, snap or clarity as the realtek, also the GUI to manage the settings is terrible, its like its been designed by a 6 yr old, the audio cuts when you make changes to bit-depth / sample-rate forcing you to restart it, at least with Realtek it automatically started to continue the sound after changing, when you change the levels in the EQ page they dont change in real-time, well, you have to release you mouse button to hear it, you cant slide it up and down while holding down the mouse to hear the changes, you can not use arrow keys either... its just a massive let down and I dont like it one bit!

- Im not a serious music producer or anything but I do like to mess with Ableton a little for fun and the Realtek ALC887 had nice sound, the annoying thing is the VIA VT2021 chip is "supposedly" better according to gigabyte, in that it has 108db SNR (compared to the Realtek 97db SNR) and they called it Blu-Ray sound or something? pffft!!

can anyone recommend a cheap replacement that has better sound than this Via ? - nothing serious, just a little bit better than this.

I have 1 x PCI-e and 1 x PCI port available

thanks

VIA onboard audio is poor really. Also more proof that higher S/R isn't everything (little joke relating to another thread). I'd grab a Xonar DGX, or a DG if you want the PCI version. Very good budget sound card that is better than most onboard audio solutions.

yeah I cant believe how bad it actually is??? what makes Gigabyte put this on a £70 board and put the better one on a £45 board I just dont know?? very disapointed as I dont game or anything, just audio... and the mobo has crap audio...just my luck though...!!!

yeah its looking like the card you mentioned.. PCI version I think

cheers

I have a Z77-D3H and actually thought this VIA chip was pretty good actually. I didn't bother putting my XtremeMusic back in because I thought it was up to the job.

While not completely terrible the VIA audio chipsets aren't exactly inspiring and in comparison to some of the newer Realtek ones, which really aren't too bad at all, they do seem pretty poor.

oh i noticed it instantly and I dont have a great audio setup either, the bass wasnt there, the high end wasnt there, just didnt have the 'punch' of the realtek in the H61, I have messed with the EQ to get it sounding better but just doesnt sound that good
