Hi All,
first post to you fine people........

I built this spec over the last 6 months or so. Originally built it to try out various opperating systems and eventually as a platform for modest gaming (Microsoft FSX being it's toughest test )

Originally built it with a BiostarGF7050V-M7 (for cheapness) but had to change to the Asus P5QL Pro as the graphics card wouldn't fit. Did I make a mistake buying the Asus board mentioned? Should I have gone for a better board? (still Asus......... I like Asus;) )

Asus P5QL Pro mobo
Q6600 core 2 quad (stock cooler)
2x2gig sticks Geil Black Dragon 1066 5-5-5-15
Palit Radeon HD4870 1gig Sonic
800w Titan dual rail psu
iCute midi case
LG W2252TQ Flatron display
360gig HD
Lightscribe x16 speed rewriter
Logitech laser mouse
generic ps2 keyboard

(I had nothing but problems with it for months before reading this forum..... took advice directed at someone else and ran memtest - loads of errors. Moved dimms from yellow banks to black banks - no more errors (Cheers guys)).

Just bought an Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 pro but not fitted yet (weekend job).

I'm thinking of the Arctic cooling memory cooling solution also.

2nd question :- will I see any benefits if I overclock this processor (is it even possible with this board?I don't have a problem changing the mobo as my 'main' pc has just given up the ghost. I'm not bothered about fixing it as it was an old single core amd machine and needed an upgrade anyway so I'm going to get a core 2 duo e8400 and either use the Biostar mobo, the Asus P5QL Pro (above) or if you guys think the above spec is ok for the quad core then I could be tempted to buy a better Asus card for it, something like the P5Q-E. Phew.... only a short post for my first one :)

What do you think??

Regards

first off welcome to the forums, you shud easilly get that cpu to 2.8-3ghz on that board and yes you will see a sizeable increase in performance

Cheers phill0i,

thanks for the reply. I'll not bother trying it yet untill the weekend when I install the freezer 7 pro.

Once you pop on that cooler, that should hit a minimum of 3.0GHz to be honest. and if FSX is about the most demanding game you will be playing

a Q6600 @ 3.0GHz (no point in actually going above this) and you should see a good increase in performance
4gig of 1066 ram
and a 4870 1gig should be fantastic for what you require on a 22" screen :)

Thanks for the reply Kennysevenfold, I'll have a read up on the best way to do it.

If I'm overclocking to 3.0Ghz, do you think I need to add ram cooling ?

No problem, erm no i dont think you will need extra ram cooling as with you having 1066MHz ram you wont have to overclock it to keep up with the cpu speeds. So i doubt cooling of the ram will be an issue if running it at stock speeds mate :D

Edit:

Aslo have a look in these pages for hints and tips on how to go about your overclocking, and some useful utilities on monitoring temps etc.

Hope this helps :)

The ASUS ROG boards should give you better options for overclocking but even safely the ASUS AI should bring the processor you mentioned up to 3ghz in extreme mode

Just had a look at the Asus ROG boards.... you swine......:D I want one now.

If I get one, which processor do I use it for....... the q6600 mentioned above or the E8400 I'll be buying soon. The unlucky processor will have to make do with the P5QL Pro. I suppose the real question is, which processor will show the better performance for my modest gaming needs............... Hmm..........

they are nice boards, very nice to look at but the gains in terms of overclocking is at a min.

the mainstream AI seris boards are good, or you could go with DFI (harder to overclock through)

Gigabtye are good and easy to overclock as well, not as easy as asus I got to admit

The DFI boards in my opinion have improved greatly in the last 6 months or so. The LANPARTY UT X48-T3RS is the best board by far,

I may try and get one when my rampage formula is accepted as being faulty.

With the processors, I couldn't tell you. one's a 2.4ghz and the over is 3ghz as standard. Only thing is I wouldn't go with the dual core anymore myself.

I think I'll give the Lanparty mobo a miss and stick to Asus. As to which Asus ??? I'll have a read up on some reviews........ it will be between the ROG board or one of the P5Q's (I do like that ROG board though AMG.

Big thanks to all of you for your help and making me feel so welcome.

Right............ turn PC off, remove mobo, mount ACF7pro. blow some air onto hot, hot, hot Northbridge heatsink with antex spot cooler and start overclocking (2 weeks before I can afford the new mobo).

After reading the guides that Kennysevenfold pointed me to. Got it at 3.0GHz at 1.18 Vcore.

Max Temp running Prime 95 = 50 C

I could not believe how much cooler the cpu was running (@2.4GHz) after fitting the ACF7Pro. A drop of 18C instantly!! Well impressed

Running Prime 95 for 2 hrs now, going to run it overnight. Fingers crossed :-)

Nice :D

hope all is well tomowrrow morning :)

The minute I went back to have a look at Prime95, the test had stopped on one core. Upped Vcore by a smidgen (technical term) and it ran all night - no probs :) Ram is set back at 1066, everything is looking good :D

I'll run prime for 24hrs when I rebuild my other machine, can't be doing without a machine for 24 whole hours

Just wish I'd found you guys earlier.

Big thanks to everybody for all their help, especially Kennysevenfold
