Hi all,

thanks for letting me part of this forum, here is my problem, i was doing some electrical work in the house on sat where the office pc was on which i forgot to turn off, I turned all the power off from the fuse board and carried out the work needed, on sunday i went to switch the office pc but there were no lights no movement ? just a flash led on the psu i followed the guide on the web for the pc i have and it turns out the the mobo i at fault.

the question is the old mobo is an asus and the new one which will arrive today is an asus with the same socket for the processor, will i be able to plug the old hdd in to this mobo and will it boot with out haveing to format the hdd as i dont want to lose any data from this hdd.

i know its long but any advise would be great .

If it's running a different Chipset from your old board then you might experience a few problems. There are a few workarounds available but you should at least be able to get the system up and running, backup all your files and then do a clean install. What o/s are you running?

its running XP m8, the old mobo or old pc is a HP t819.uk , the new mobo is a Asus P5G41C-M LX G41 Socket 775

as long as dont have to reinstall xp on the hdd i would be greatful

Would Very Strongly recommend getting a bak-up of all your data off first using a Linux Live CD. That way you won't lose anything if things were to go wrong.

just save everything you need onto another pc (i presume you have another when you refer to the current pc as the 'office pc')

run the hdd as a slave and drag and drop, then do a fresh install.

by the way, you sure your mobo is bust, you tried another psu at all? that is usually the first thing that goes

i did try the trouble shooting on the hp web site and it seemed to point to the mobo being defective but after money spent the psu was to blame and its cost me a ****** fortune!!! But hey you live and learn oh well.

I do have another issue now ive put a 450w psu in the pc the fans are constantly running high ive checked in the bios to slow it down but no joy any pointers guys???

Oh BTW THE MOBO AND OTHER STUFF I GOT FOR NO REASON I GOING TO MAKE A NEW PC which i want to overclock so i will start a newthread when i need help thx

Welcome to the forums :)

Fans can be controlled via the BIOS only if they are connected to a 4 pin PWM or System fan header on the Motherboard. Which can then control the speed via voltage alteration. If they are 12 volt case fans connected directly to the PSU they will run at full speed constantly. :)

yes it connected via the mobo but when in the bios im not able to change anything ? B4 I changed the psu, when you turned the pc on the fans would be really loud then once the system settled down the noise would reduce, when i would do any multitasking or burning dvd the fans would get noisy again (understandable) but now it full on , hope this helps thx

just stop the fan on the new psu its that i think the stock psu had 2 speeds would i be able to slow this psu fan down its well noisy ?? or would i need to get another psu if so which would you guys recommend thx :D
