New modem/router or some sort of wifi setup??

I've got a Netgear D7000 modem/router for my 76mb Plusnet fibre connection - the connection is rock solid in terms of every device with the exception of my phone (and to a lesser degree, my wife's phone) where the wifi appears to just stop randomly!

If I shut the wifi off on my phone and then re-enable, it connects immediately and I can just continue using it.

I've never had the connection drop on my laptop (connected via wifi) or my desktop (connected via powerline homeplugs) - it's exclusively my phone! (and as say, my wife has also commented on having to reboot the wifi on her phone) - although I stream a lot of media via Plex and other apps like Twitter etc seem to "trigger" the drop (although strangely not things like Netflix!?!?)

Anyway, I've messed around with wifi channels and MTU settings until I'm blue in the face so am trying to figure out whether I should kick the router into touch and get a brand new one or simply get some sort of add-on technology to replace the wifi of it!

Any suggestions welcome - this is driving me bananas!

btw I tried the Asus DSL AC-88U last week but prefer the Netgear UI (and access control it gives you) - not to mention that fact that I couldn't wall-mount it anywhere near as easy as the Netgear!

Sadly yes and yes - I've tried various channels for the wifi, including running one of these wifi checkers to see what is and isn't congested and the firmware is bang up to date!

I connect to the wifi predominantly on the 2.4GHz band - mainly because I've read that the distance isn't great on the 5GHz and I like to be able to stream media all around the house!
