Well I'm looking for a new monitor, and am wanting a 24" with 1920*1200 resolution, but I'm spoiled for choice. I have around £250 to spend, but if I can possibly go a little higher if it means I will get a far superior unit.

I have been looking at the Samsung T240, what do people think about this monitor? And is it much better than the older Samsung monitors with very similar specs?

Thanks,
Richard

Hmm, looks like a good monitor, and has a height adjustable stand, and I don't think the absence of HDMI would bother me too much, as I could always get an HDMI>DVI adaptor if I wanted to connect it up with HDMI.

Another question that has come up whilst browsing around, what type of panel would be best for my usage? I will be mainly gaming and general browsing/office work, but might be doing some CAD work too. I was thinking a TN panel would be best for me, because it has the best response times, although I have seen some IPS panels (I think) with 6ms response times, although are vastly more expensive, however if this would be a far better choice, are there any recommended models? as I am willing to look into second hand units.

@ Chaapa'ai: What is so special about a 100hz refresh rate? and I was wanting something larger than 22 inch ideally.

Friend just bought one and it is unbelievably better than my sammy 240t. The refresh rate makes for ZERO screen tears and no need for Vsync to slow your graphics card down. First person shooters are as smooth as silk and really remind me of the old CRT days. Right now only 22 inchers are out but they will be the next big thing for gamers. If only I had waited a few months.

Oh, ok, sounds good, but I can only see the standard (refresh rate frequency not mentioned) and 120Hz units, does the frequency correspond to a refresh rate time?

I was mistaken, it was 120hz. They are fairly new and only two companies are putting them out right now. Samsung and Viewsonic. The problem I hate that I have is that I am forced to use VSync to keep the screen from tearing when the game has anything moving fast. Lights flickering, etc. I am surprised there is no talk about it on this board, *yet.

I've just googled screen tearing, as I wasn't sure what you meant, and I haven't had it much, but the occasional time I have had it, I just thought it was a bug in the game, not anything to do with the monitor. Is it a common occurrence?

Although I think the main thing that puts me off the 120Hz monitors is that they are only available in 22" sizes, and at less than "Full HD" resolution, which, although I won't be watching a lot of movies on it, I could be some, and would like the full resolution.

£250 won't get you anything but TN at 24". Non-TN wise, for £210, you can get a good Dell 22":

Bascially if you want a non-TN panel, you can stay within your budget, but would have to drop down to 22", or if you really want to go 24" then your budget needs to increase by £100-150. The two main ones to choose from are the HP LP2475W (my personal choice), or the Dell 2408WFP.

If you'd be happy enough with a TN panel then you can easily stay within your budget, and there are many to choose from.

Well the main problem is, I don't know how much I would notice the difference between a TN, or Non-TN panel. I would be using the screen for gaming and general use mostly, but will be watching the occasional movie on it, although it will very rarely be in a group, so I don't think viewing angles will be too much of an issue.
Also, how noticeable is the colour differences between a TN panel, and a non-TN panel, and would the fact that I'm slightly red-green colour blind make a difference to how well I see it anyway?
And lastly, the response times, with a 24" TN panel, response times are around the 5ms mark, however others are higher at 6 or 8ms from the ones I've seen around, and my current monitor is 2ms, so how much difference would I notice?

Picture quality is much, much better on a non-TN panel. 8ms, 2ms... really no difference.

Well I think I'm going to go for this one, when I can decide I am willing to spend that much, or when I see a second hand one available.

Unless anyone knows of a reason why I shouldn't get that one, and why I should get a different screen?

That monitor is awesome. Its a lot of cash, but you will get years of brilliant image quality and wide viewing angles. Really good choice.

Great choice R.C.Anderson I ordered that one today, superb quality panel, it's one of few monitors that have H-IPS technology. Worth paying the extra.

Infact, a little question, which would be better to do out of the following:

1) Buy the HP monitor I mentioned above only.
2) Buy a TN pannel (possibly a larger size) along with a hardware colorimeter, and a new gfx card (I currently only have a ATI 3850)

It'll be used for gaming, a few movies, and for general PC use (browsing, word docs etc)

I'd buy the HP monitor and then save up for an ATi 4890 or Nvidia GTX275 for £150. It's the easy option to buy everything cheaper. A high quality monitor will serve you well even in 2-3 years time - the one piece of computer technology that doesn't date as fast.
