I am getting a Dell U2311H to replace my old 22" 1680x1050 monitor. With my current setup, will I have a huge fps drop moving to a higher res? Will games be unplayable?I will be getting a new GFX card in a couple of months, but until then will I be able to play with decent fps or will my 8800GTX struggle?I had no performance issues with my old monitor, playing most modern games maxed without any problems.

this is one of those things your just gonna have to wait to find out - i doubt anyone can predict an accurate fps-loss - youll have to judge that for yourself and then upgrade the gfx card accordingly in a couple of months

Think the 8800GTX performs a bit slower than a GTS 250.
Take a look at reviews for that card and you'll see the difference going from 1680x1050 to 1920x1080. You'll get a couple of frames short of that I would imagine.

arnt most games optimised for 1920 by 1080p ? corrent me if im wrong but 1050p and 1080p should be fairly similar, its only 1440p and 1600p that games arnt optimised or struggle. theres obviously going to be a lot higher fps on 1050p but on 1080p there shouldnt be that much of a loss than if you was going from 1080p to 1440p. i dont know though i could be wrong.

Well the amount of pixels being rendered at 1920x1080 as opposed to 1680x1050 is about 17% more, so I would expect a drop in frame rate of approximately that amount.

It's not as simplistic as that, because going up a resolution could also cause you to run out of vram as well which would result in a slideshow. I think the GTX has 768MB so in most games this shouldn't be the case, but certain games will go over that threshold at 1080.

An 8800GTX won't have any VRAM issues at 1920x1080, because the settings required to make the VRAM be an issue won't be within reach of the 8800GTX. That's why I'm very opposed to this 'VRAM is the most important thing evarrrr!' trend, because they're using about 3 games, and running them on GTX580 SLI, turning the settings up so high (like 24x AA, tessellation etc) that the FPS isn't playable anyway, then saying 'look, it's using tons of VRAM!'

Well no **** Sherlock.

More on topic - 1920x1080 isn't that much higher than 1680x1050 overall, so the drop won't be as bad as if you were going from 1440x900 to 1920x1080.

Well I am only playing Starcraft 2 atm so I believe I will be ok.I am expecting my new monitor to arrive tomorrow,I will see what kind of performance loss I will have.
