Hi all,

Maybe you can enlighten me on this one. At the moment I am thinking of upgrading my monitor and graphics cards, but can't really afford to do both.

My monitor is presently a Hyundai Imagequest 19" and my graphics card is a 512MB x1950Pro.

So, which to upgrade? Is the monitor worth an upgrade, I've wanted a 22" for a while... or should I bother with an 8800GT? Will my present graphics card be OK with a 22" widescreen?

depends, what do you play?

Running at native res on a 22" will most probubly need a new gfx card with modern games. Its the reason I went for a 19" widescreen instead of a 22".

Get a nice monitor buy a good one and its a good investment. Get a gfx card later when they become cheaper. :)

I had the 19" imagequest, and while being fantastic, the best upgrade I have ever made was moving the my 2232BW. Id recommend that from personal preference, besides better cards coming out shortly anyway so its an excuse to wait for them

Sorry to bump - what kind of resolutions will I be able to play FPS games on with a x1950Pro and a 22" monitor?

As far as I know the maximum resolution a 22" monitor supports is 1680 x 1050. I'm not sure, but your X1950 might struggle slightly depending on the game if you do play at those resolutions. COD4 might not be too bad, but I've got a feeling Bioshock might run slowly and I'm unsure about HL2

I have a 512mb X1950Pro and a 22" monitor. Now I dont game very often but did try the crisis demo and it defaulted to medium settings. Still looked awesome though. The card is powerful enough but not if you want the highest settings

You'll have to downgrade to medium settings, and forget about AA, for 1680 x 1050 on a x1950 Pro. It really depends if you are willing to play games with less detail than they were originally intended to have. I wouldn't want to make that sacrifice. Although I love my Samsung 226CW, I think getting my 8800 GTS 640MB about 10 months ago was the biggest change to my gaming graphics.

If I was you I would get a GPU. I game with a 19" and the 8800GT is a great card to go with it. You'll be able to add some AA and AF too without suffering because of the lower resolution. I personally think gaming at 1280 is decent. :)

Is a GTS worth it over a GT?

Or to put it another way

How much of an improvement over an x1950Pro is a GTS?

Do you mean the old GTS or the new 512MB one?

The GT is better than the old 640MB GTS, but the new GTS - 512MB one is faster than the GT!

Quite confusing!!!

Just to be clear (and it is pretty confusing) I am referring to my G80 8800 GTS 640MB, which is slower than the 8800 GT (which is G92). There is a G92 version of the 8800 GTS (it has 512MB of memory, good way to tell them apart) but it isn't a lot faster than the GT.

So the order of power (least to most) is

x1950 Pro
<<Big Jump>>
8800 GTS 320MB (G80)
8800 GTS 640MB (G80)
8800 GT 512MB (G92)
8800 GTS 512MB (G92)
8800 GTX 768MB (G80)
8800 Ultra 768MB (G80, later revision)

I would, and probably will, get the 8800 GT.
