New monitor time?

I have a Samsung SM2443BW. It was purchased in September 2009, so is out of warranty. Even so, I called Samsung to see if they could do anything and their response was sort of "tough cookies - here's our expensive service centre's number lol". :/ There might be some sort of European "fit for purpose" thing which might apply but I dont know how to go about trying that line on them, whether Id have to go through Samsung or the retailer.

The problem is that the backlight is on the way out. I was browsing news articles this morning and suddenly the screen went black. I checked the cables in case one had come loose. Nothing. I then left it off for 5 minutes, and turned it on again, and it was ok. Then after about 10 mins it went off again, and now will only come on for about 1 second after being off for any length of time. I've checked the cables, and have now switched to an older monitor (from my older computer), so its not a gfx card or cable issue. I've also tried the standard samsung monitor reset thing of holding in the menu button for 10 seconds. I really liked that it was a 16:10 monitor, and most 24" screens are 16:9. Ah well, so, the question is: Am I stuffed? Do I have to fork out for a new monitor or do you think I have any chance of getting satisfaction from Samsung?

If you think it's a lost cause, any monitor recommendations? At least 24", general purpose monitor. Writing and comparing documents, some art/photo work, gaming, browsing, watching the odd movie. I dont have a lot of disposable cash at the moment so best bang/buck would be good. Maybe up to ~£300. It doesnt seem right that this monitor (expensive for me at the time) would die in less than 4 years. Obviously the best solution would have been for me just to get a warranty replacement for this one, but life is rarely fair.

Cheers for any tips/advice.
