For the past few months my monitor has started making clicking noises. It wasn't all the time at first, but gradually over time it became more and more frequent. Then it started to turn on and off by itself, and more recently I noticed some discoloration in various games. It also appears as though it isn't displaying text very clearly as well.

I have checked the cables, graphics card, dvi cables, power cable, and even swapped things around to isolate the problem, and seems as though the monitor is simply on its way out.

I'm a bit annoyed understandably about this as my Samsung S27A950D has been perfect for 120hz 1080p gaming, and I fear now that I won't find a suitable replacement.

I'm now looking into the possibility of a 27" 1440p monitor, but I am not comfortable spending £500,+ on a monitor again only to potentially be dealt with a similar fate. So ideally I am looking possibly at £350 max. It doesn't have to be 144hz though, because I reckon the resolution increase will suffice. But I would like to get a screen that is responsive and has good blacks.

My only slightconcern with going to 1440p, is whether my gtx 970 is going to not be up to the job, so I'm contemplating the idea of getting a 1080p 144hz monitor to replace what I had like for like, but big part of me thinks I should just move to 1440p for future proofing.

Any suggestions?

Thanks, I will have read up on that monitor.

Is it worth going to 1440p at just 60hz though? Really tempted to get 1440p at 27" simply because it seems perfect pixel size wise. Alternatively, I may go 24" for 1080p at 144hz, but really tempted by the increase in resolution at 1440p.

I'm in the same boat...I'm thinking of getting one of these...60hz but after the reviews the Superwide makes up for it...I'm only a casual gamer though so it looking forward to video editing etc on it...

If the Acer x34 wasn't Acer and a Dell the decision would be easy....super wide Gsync and 1440p would tick all my boxes....but there is no way I'm laying out 1000 quids on an acer

Yeah I looked into superwide, but not sure if I would like it.

The more I look at around, the more it seems something like the new Asus rog swift would tick all the right boxes, but £700+ seems insane for a monitor - I spent £500 once before and don't really feel they are worth even that much.

Whyever not? Your eyes are the principal way you interact with your PC so you should get the best quality monitor you can afford. Note that this isn't the same as the monitor with the most features.

I've got the BenQ GW2765HT and have to say I'm still very happy with it! (Although it is my first IPS monitor though so I don't have much to compare it to!)

Oh and I've got a GTX970 and I've had no issues whatsoever with gaming at 1440p!

Just from personal experience. It doesn't fill me with confidence that spending the same or more again will mean my next monitor will be more reliable this time round.

Good to know, I will have a read up on the benq.

I have the same monitor. Have you tried overclocking the refresh rate? I couldn't get past 65Hz before the panel started to drop frames.

Shame really as otherwise it's a very good all-rounder.

To be perfectly honest I had no idea you could overclock a monitor!!!

To be fair though I've never seen a reason to mess with anything on the panel - it's always been spot on!
