New motherboard bundle or a new GPU

I'm looking to upgrade I've had the itch for a while, and my questions do I go for a motherboard bundle or the gpu upgrade first?

My spec is 4790k, 16mb mem and a 980ti, I was thinking along the lines for amd 3700 and maybe a 2070s. I can't justify buying the lot in one go (wife) I'm gaming at 1440 and currently having to turn down a good few graphical option to try and get at least 60fps in new games.

Do I slap in a new GPU or would I better off getting the motherboard bundle and getting the gpu next year.

I would think for gaming you would see more of an improvement with a newer GPU. That said, I'd be tempted to wait a few more months and see what the new AMD GPU lineup brings to the party - whether to make the 2070S choice easy, bring down prices, or actually increases performance.

GPU would give you the numbers- but depending on your games you will find CPU will then be the limiting factor. Games such as BFV, Assassins creed will push those 8 threads to the limit, 70% of games though will be fine if your CPU is overclocked, 4.6ghz etc

do your GPU first, then monitor how your CPU is handling the extra GPU power. at 1440p most of the load will be on the GPU . should be able to hold out though for a bit and gain funds and time for CPU/Mobo upgrade later on

if your monitor isn't g-sync or even freesync and 60hz then

Thank you for the advice, I've not overclocked my cpu or gpu I think perhaps i'll look at that I did intend to oc the cpu and I bought water cooler about a year for it. I installed the cooler but never actually over clocked it. I've started a new business and ended up being really busy and forgot about it for a while.

100% GPU.

My 4790k is running at 4.7ghz and I don't actually need to replace it. Usage is 60% while gaming and GPU is 95%+
I will probably go Zen3 in the new year, but there's no actual need to upgrade just yet.
Get your overclock sorted and you'll see a difference for sure :)

While each chip is different, this is my config:

  • Multi x47 (start at x45)
  • Load Line Calibration = High
  • CPU Voltage in offset mode = +0.020
  • CPU current capability = 120%
  • Phase Control = Extreme
  • VTT = 1 notch over standard
I also set my RAM XMP profile

A 980ti can run 1440p no problem on high settings, I know this because I used to have one. A new cpu would be more beneficial and overclocking the chip as already stated. I personally wouldn't upgrade the graphics card until newer cards are out but that is just me not willing to use 2000 series cards. Maybe go the AMD route.

GPU will give 10+ FPS - CPU on 90% of games across the WHOLE of steam library would give average 3+ including cores or overclocks- but thats the whole general picture.

AAA games such as BFV that are well optimised for multicore would see good gains, specially on Multiplayer but GPU upgrade will still give the more FPS count .

900 to 2000 is a nice jump in performance , specially if you can grab 2070 Super on nice Black Friday deal

I went to a 2080ti mate and returned it after 3 days because I personally thought Ray Tracing was laughable. Sticking with my cards until the next gen of AMD or Nvidia. Going from a 980ti to a 2000 series does make more sense, however I would still wait.

I'm finding it difficult to wait, I still need to try an oc. With Black Friday just around the corner I might just bag myself a great deal on a 2070s. I seem to be the only one looking after the pennies the wife went on holiday to her mates in Qatar and spent a fortune and decided to blow anther £500 on business class on the way home! It's easier to beg for forgiveness that to ask for permission. lol.
