new motherboard for upgrade

You can buy a dedicated sound card which would be far better than onboard sound and a motherboard for £200.

am i going to find a lot of difference as im only using headphones or would i just better getting a better motherboard

Well if they are just normal/average headphones use the onboard solution found on a motherboard, then if not satisfied, get a sound card later?

As for a better gaming board, theres nothing much that the one above wont do, it will even allow good overclocking if you add a modest £25-£30 heatsink to the CPU.

i have just bought this z77 mpower http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-219-MS&groupid=701&catid=5&subcat=2261 unfortunately its out of stock at the mo but its worth waiting for. And as for the sound, i have a x-fi platinum and have not installed it and i dont think i will, the audio on the mpower is very good indeed, very punchy and clear and i do value my sound, have hooked it up to my £3k's worth of home cinema(audio only) and was plesently impressed and like i said enough to not reinstall my sound card, prefer the cleaner lines inside my case. Although the asus sound cards are ment to sound better.

i was looking at the Gigabyte Z77X-UD5H so its not worth the premium just stick with the Gigabyte Z77X-D3H, i only have the corsair hsa1 headset but later will get better set

The UD5H uses the ALC898 soundchip with two amps and Creative X-Fi emulation.

Better than most.
