Am i right or wrong to say you can get a twin CPU montheboard to support 2 AMD Athlon X2 64 chips?

I was told today but cannot see anything is this right or a lot or garbage.

If it is true the question is why when you have 2 dual core CPU's running is this not the same a a Quad core or do you gain anything else of is it just price?

It is roughly the same as quad but a fair bit more expensive.
The Quad FX is a consumer solution that uses physical 2 cpus and a special motherboard. Compared to a 1 physical cpu quad core it is expensive and power hungry. Not recommended.
The other option is A dual socket server board with 2 opterons (the server version of the X2's)
For the reasons stated though, I wouldn't recommend either of these options.

Instead, get an intel core 2 quad with a normal motherboard and save a lot of money or wait for AMD's real quads to arrive around december & use a normal motherboard. They will be called 'phenom X4' when they come out.

The only real reason to get a dual socket system is if you want twice as many cores as are currently available on 1 chip. At the moment, this is 8 (ie two quads).

AMD is supposed to be releasing something called 'FASN8' which is an RD790 chipset mobo that can take two Phenom X4's for a dual-socket eight-core system. The motherboard can handle Quad Crossfire as well; although there is doubt as to whether this system has been scrapped or not. Still, I'd buy it if it was actually released for a reasonable, enthusiast-class price.
