i received my b grade motherboard today from ocuk and on closer inspection it appears that there may be a bent or missing pin in the cpu socket. ive attached a pic but its not the best quality unfortunately however ive circled the bit in question maybe someone who knows a bit better what the 110 socket looks like will be able to tell me if there is a pin missing thnx

Which motherboard is it ? Also have you tried it with a CPU and tried to start it ?

The picture is not good at all and can't tell if you have a totally missing pin or it's been bent over or snapped off.

Have you tried using a fine tweezers to maybe raise the pin if it is bent ? Just be gentle when you do it, even a toothpick or needle can be used to gently work the pin back up. On your picture it just looks like it's missing but the picture is very blurry so can't tell.

okay looking better at that picture it looks like the pin has been pushed back into the other pins, so try work it forward and into place, it shouldn't be a big deal to do if you are gentle and slow about it.

Yes should be all fine as long as all the pins are there and back in place. I wouldn't panic too much about it, sadly sometimes they do bend out of place if the cpu cover has fallen off in transport and something had knocked the cpu socket, but if all pins are there and as in your case it's only 1 pin bent so I would try work it back in place and all should be good. If it had been a lot of pins bent or missing then I would send it back.

ok i think i have managed to get it back into place, although when you closely examine it its not 100% at the same angle as the other pins but does look a lot lot better

heres another very poor pic ( damn blackberries ) which at least doesnt show a gaping hole in the row of pins

I can't tell from that picture mate, but just with your eyes you should be able to tell if the pin is about right compared to the pins next to it and just make sure the pin is at the right height too so is on the same level as the others so makes contact with the CPU well.

See what I would do is make sure it looks right by eye and then get the CPU and stick it in the socket and clamp it down with the CPU holder, then un-clamp it and gently remove the CPU again and look at the pin if it had moved in any direction it shouldn't have compared to the rest. If all looks good just stick the CPU back in and clamp it down then setup the PC as normal with the CPU cooler on and other components.

I would't try and bend it back any more mate. If you snap the pin it is then your fault. If it hasn't fixed it with what you've done, I'd get in touch with the etailer who supplied it.

Get a CPU in it and try it out, just incase it is faulty mate. That way you can make sure it all works and not have to go threw the RMA later when you need it.
