Mazda has unveiled the all-new fourth-generation MX-5 at simultaneous events in the US, Spain and Japan. PH was at the latter, flagged as 'Thanks day in Japan' and attended by lots and lots of deeply reverential MX-5 fans dutifully parading past and paying their respects to a car that promises "a dramatic leap in Jinba Ittai driving fun." Probably for the best Harris wasn't present...

I'm sure lots of people have been looking forward to this (myself included), and perhaps fearing the worst, but it looks like Mazda have pulled it off. It looks very smart, much sleeker than the previous model, and perhaps most importantly, it hasn't got fatter - it's smaller (apart from width), lighter, has a lower CoG and is slightly more powerful that it's predecessor.

Can't wait to see some tests/reviews, I think this might end up being a cracking little car. Definitely a contender if I ever decide to swap cars - much as I love mine currently, I do miss throwing the top down on a summer evening :)

I know it goes against everything the MX-5 is about but I just wish they broke the 200bhp barrier to make it that bit more interesting!

Agree with the mini F-type comment :) Definitely more of a aggressive look to it. I always liked the fact the MX-5 styling was a soft look, even it did get them christened as hairdressers cars.

Really like the look of that!!

More power? The MX5 doesn't need heaps of power to be a roadster, one of the things it's renowned for. Regardless, if you want ore power, it's easily done.

Think theres a bit too much metal above the front wheels, throws off the looks slightly, but I guess passenger impact regulations restrict the bonnet line. Overall though I think it looks great.

If its still n/a then I think thats a mistake, much as I like the na power delivery I think its a bit of a dead end now for a mass market car. These skyactiv engines wont give much more power easily, super high compression that they are. A 200bhp factory option would be nice! But not sure we will see it.

Will be keeping my mk3 anyway, especially as its 200bhp now :D

I like it, nice skinny tyres too!

Wasn't much of a fan of the mk3 (bit too boat like) though the later facelifts were ok but this seems a bit more aggressive, can see a bit of f-type in there.

Engines haven't been confirmed but I wouldn't expect anything too powerful, its not what the mx5 is about.

engine mounted behind the struts

people saying it doesn't have enough power. have you ever driven an MX5?

Hah, I had black windscreen surround and mirrors on my MK1.

I love it, it's way better than what I thought it might look like. I'm glad it's also smaller in ever dimention and but wider. Wider is not a bad thing and it's still got the face that everyone expects from it. Just a shame it's gonna get ruined by a front plate.

I miss my MK1. It's given me some kick to get my portfolio sorted and find a damn good job (recently made redundant from a rubbish job) and one day have me another 5.

I think that looks absolutely magical.

Not sure if i dreamt it but weren't Mazda making the new MX5 in confunction with Alfa Romeo or is this the Mazda version and Alfa will release their Spider in the future?
