New N-type routers, poor wireless signal?

In a crazy bid to sell my spare pc and buy a modem router with print server, I bought a Belkin N+ router. After configuring WPA2 security, my laptop keeps losing wireless connection if it is 4 - 5 metres away from the router. Also, the usb slot does not allow wireless printing (despite the box indicating it does).

So, I go and buy an ASUS DSL-N13 All-in-one modem router that does have print server features. Installed the router, configure WPA2 security as you do and just like the Belkin, my wireless connection is lost or drops at 4m away from router. I reposition the router around the house and still no wireless connection at 4m.

I have tried changing router channels, connection type (B, G, B+G, N), DNS auto addressing, static IP and even direct MAC addressing, but still the same problem.

I have an old BT Voyager 2110 router that works perfectly with same security settings in all rooms of my bungalow and 15m away in the garden.

My wife's laptop also suffers the same wireless disconnection problem too.

Any ideas on why the new N standard routers have poor range?

I once bought a billion router for £60 it came with voip features and SPI and QOS, after messing with it, the SPI didn't work and neither did the VOIP. Bloody chineese company selling products that just don't work.

So i don't know about your belkin and asus router, but they are more widely known than billion. It does sound like a strange problem, i first thought it might be your laptop as same problem with two routers.
