New NAS, do I need a switch?

As I understand it (and my network experience consists of powerline plugs) the new NAS I've just bought can be plugged in to the back of my router (BT HH3) and will then be visible on my wired and wireless network.

My desktop PC is two floors up from the router, linked by the aforementioned powerline adaptors. There are two ethernet ports on the rear of my new QNAP TS-421 - can I 'daisy chain' from plug > NAS > PC, or will it need to be plug > switch > NAS, PC, anything else?

Yes, plugging the NAS into the router will make it visible on the wired and wireless network (presuming that the BT HH3 is doing both at the moment).

If you want the NAS next to the PC upstairs (but there is no real need unless you need access to it regularly) you'll need a switch upstairs: powerline adaptor > switch > then PC/NAS/Anything else into the switch. The two ports on the rear of the QNAP won't function in "daisychain" fashion. A 5 port switch can be had for relatively little outlay.

My QNAP is in a cupboard hidden away. I've not touched it for months now - setup and forget.
