Hey guys,

I tried to install a new Belkin network card today on my mates old 98 SE gaming rig but we hit a bit of a snag…

It is recognised okay and everything and the cards software seems to install okay, but when it comes to the driver it requires the Windows CD. It’s an HP machine so it doesn’t have any original OS discs – just the recovery ones… and they don’t have the files required. I’ve tried my 98 SE upgrade disc and that doesn’t seem to work either?

Tomorrow I’m borrowing my brothers 98 SE disc to see if that makes a difference.

I know a couple of the files it wanted (inetmib1.dll – was the first one) were quite easily available from most of the free DLL Download sites, but other files like ftp.exe were also prompted for and I’d have imagined they’d have been present on the 98 upgrade disc?

Any ideas what could be going on? Things to try etc ;)

Cheers,

SW.

I expect that the files you need are on the upgrade CD but either inside .cab files or compressed with a file name such as ftp.ex_

If you can't sort it tomorrow, list the Windows 98 SE files you need and I'm sure one of us can provide them.

Usually factory installed Windows 98 cab files can be found in the c:\Windows\Options\Cabs folder. Have a look there and see if they are.

Thanks for the offer mate ;)

I got the full version disk today but never got the chance to try it out... I've now got it planned for Saturday :)

Is there any way of extracting a .cab file into my current OS (XP) so I could prepare a CD with the required files from the original Win 98 CD?

Cheers,

SW.

Hmm. I think the default installation directory was C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\ when I was prompted for the files - so that could be worth a shout :)

I guess its just 98 being a bit fickle :p

Thanks,

SW.

Winrar can read and extract from the 98 .cab files.

Windows 98 isn't sometimes fickle it's plain stupid and can't ever remember file locations. Luckily you usually have the option to browse for the missing file(s) if it can't find what it needs.
