Nintendo Debuts New 3DS Named 'New 3DS'

Nintendo used a Japanese Nintendo Direct this morning (which many hoped would contain a Super Smash Bros. Wii U release date) to announce a new version of its 3DS handheld. The news has surprised many, and so have the details about what the 3DS revamp actually contains.

The new pair of 3DS models appear to be literally called “New 3DS” and “New 3DS LL (XL),” but more on that head-scratching name later. Each features an upgraded CPU, a new small analog nub above the SNES-recolored buttons, and additional shoulder buttons next to the current ZL and ZR buttons. It supports sliding custom covers and will have better 3D than previous models as well.

It’s the CPU that’s drawing the most attention, however. Not because of its power necessarily, but because Nintendo seems intent on fracturing their 3DS userbase with this new model. They’ve announced a new Xenoblade Chronicles game for the New 3DS, and also revealed that it actually requires this new CPU to play.

Is that a tiny analogue stick see on the right (Can't watch what I presume is a video)

Is it too late in the day for devs to start utilising the stick without alienating the non right analogue stick?

I might start paying attention to the 3DS what with the 99.9% indie + Jap games out on Vita :/

I really like the Vita, don't understand why it doesn't get more love lol. This new 3DS looks pretty sweet imho, no doubt the kids will want one of these next year, I will have an excuse to play with it then :D

I think the name is an awful choice tbh, even worse than Wii U. I mean seriously New 3DS will confuse the hell out of a lot of people especially parents who won't realize this is an upgraded version with faster CPU etc.

Who is it at Nintendo that chooses these names?

I would have gone with 3DS Ultra and 3DS Ultra XL :D

Iagree that the vita is a great piece of kit. I've got one, but don't use it too much due to lack of western AAA games. I spent hundreds of pounds on a new console to play new looking games :(

Do we know if Nintendo are treating this NewDS with it'd CPU upgrade as a De facto new console in terms of new Mario new Zelda exclusive got the New DS etc or will it share the exact same games as the 3DS but might see a little performance increase if that?

Yeah I agree stupid name, what happens when the next new handheld comes out? Does this one get stripped of its 'new' or does the new one get the title 'new new'?

I'm a bit confused as to whether Xenoblade Chronicles is the only game to take advantage of the "New" 3DS and if not then is this a proper replacement for the 3DS or just an optional upgrade that gives access to a few extra games.

Nintendo make some great games but their hardware design & marketing teams are doing their best to bankrupt the company.

Did they not learn anything from the confusion caused by the Wii/Wii U? I think most consumers still don't understand the difference and now they think it's a good idea to differentiate a new 3DS model purely by putting "New" in front of it

From a shop's point of view it's just going to be a pain trying to sell a New "New" 3DS rather than a New "Old" 3DS. Selling the games that only work on the "New" 3DS will be even worse, can see a lot of hassle trying to explain to customers what the "New" 3DS is.

It's probably irrational that this winds me up so much but it frustrates me to see one of my favourite companies making such stupid decisions.

Still, Xenoblade Chronicles might be nice to revisit unless the Wii U sequel makes it out sooner over here.

Do you mean LL? I don't think it will be called that. There has already been a DS released that was shown in this was as LL, I think it was the DSI. Might just be a jap thing,

Or do you mean "new 3DS"

name doesn't make sense as people have said

"would you like a new new 3ds or a used new 3ds?"

+1

I think LL is possibly how the XL is referred to in Japan.

What he said ^^

you mean "new 3DS"

Yeah, it seems an awful choice that will simply confuse the less informed, i.e looking through a catalog they may think that it's just a New 3DS not a 'New' 3DS, that has upgraded spec etc. I would have named it 3DS Ultra and 3DS Ultra XL lol.

Yeah 'LL' is just 'XL' for Japan (i.e. the current '3DS XL' is called the '3DS LL' in Japan).

I don't think the 'New' branding is so bad as long as it stands out on the shelf and it's marketed correctly.
The main issue with Wii U marketing is the perception that it's 'U Pad for the Wii'. At least by using the term 'New' it's more clear what the product is... it's the new 3ds, an upgrade.

I'm not sure if it will have the same name in the US/EU however.

is this a proper replacement for the 3DS or just an optional upgrade that gives access to a few extra games.

There will be more titles exclusive to the New 3DS. I see it as more of an upgrade than a replacement unless the adoption rate is very strong and the primary active user base ends up as New 3DS users, which is difficult to imagine.

I guess if Nintendo abbreviate the name to 'N3DS' and 'N3DS XL' that wouldn't be confusing to most people.

We'll likely get an N3DS next year, it looks pretty decent. No idea when these will arrive in the UK though, seems like Nintendo just killed a lot of potential sales of the regular 3DS in Europe for the holidays, a lot of peeps will be waiting for this improved version instead :P

This looks pretty cool imo, don't care about the name. Super 3DS would have been a nice name especially as the buttons are like the SNES. I really wish they'd bring back the Gameboy name though.
