GeForce 8800GS to become GeForce 9600GSO

When GeForce 8800GS got launched, it is an unpopular product. NV’s Dev team tried hard to keep its performance when shrinking it from a 8800GT, but because the lack of propaganda (yes i mean the leak slide, screen shot and spy pic), mainstream market can not accept this product in a flash.

Today, The card’s performance and price are similar to 9600GT’s. (Related: G80 VS G92, med to high end GFX cards round-up). So NV is going to change the name of GeForce 8800GS to 9600GSO, in order to Classify the card into the GeForce 9 series. From it’s current price and the new name we can sure the card will market target will be a little lower than 9600GT.

Also, G92 will be reflashed with the 55nm processing in July. We can expect some new GeForce 9 cards will be launched with the new 55nm G92, which can lower the core temperature and rise the core clock.

I wonder if we'll see a similar thing to what happens with some motherboards, a cheap sticker over where it says '8800 GS' covered with '9600 GSO'.

On that note, it's a bit of a strange choice of name for the card isn't it?

Under the sticker on my GTS/g92 is a 9000 series plastic cover ,, hehe

I never noticed it untill i put a vf1000 on it .

This product doesn't seem to make any sense unless it was priced at £70 or so. Seems a bit odd to have a card with more shaders but a smaller memory interface, it only makes matters more confusing.

Nvidia have really confused me now on which products replace what. I didn't even know there was a 8800GS.

ahaha, the July 9900GTX is just G92 again........

Yep its ******* hilarious, 55nm 2006 8800's with yet another price hike here we come. :D

Similar thing is happening with the 8800GT.

Yeah its getting the GTS treatment, gona be called a 9800 GT, and also gets an extra SLi connector slapped onto it so it can be TRi SLi'd as well like the GTS, and no doubt another £100+ slapped onto it as well, they gona take yer pants down yet again, everyone get yourselves bent ower here come the greens, and you may as well stay bent ower for the renaming price hiking again of the same cards in July. :D
