A new core (Fah Core 14) and an accompnaying set of units was launched today, and will be downloaded if you have the -advmethods flag on the GPU client config enabled. More info here:

It behaves a little different than core 11 - most noticeable are the temps. They are quite a bit lower (im at about 63 compared to 70 ish on a 511 point WU). CPU usage apparently fluctuates quite a lot more, but it seems lower than normal to me on Vista64. For me, the annoying high pitched ring of the card is now only intermittent (which i guess is good...!) in an on/off fashion, which again is a little odd... Also see some desktop stuttering on the 180.60 driver, which is a bit of a shame.

As for the points... I'd say not too bad! :D

GTX280 with shaders @1400, all other settings at stock. Current ppd: ~10300! :D

I had to manually set the core priority to high to get these numbers, else it seems to become starved of cpu time and gets around the same as the 511 point units. Still, the points are nice!

The points are definitely closer to the 511 pointers than the 384 & 353 but I've changed the core priority to see if that makes any difference.

Thinking about it, doesn't the lower ppd and lower temps simply mean the WU isn't using the full power of the GPU?

I would have thought so - hanging the core priority manually in task manager gives a massive boost to ppd, which suggests its not getting as much cpu time as it really needs on the default priority setting.

Is that the same, as enabling the scientific thing in the GPU SMP set up options?

how many points are each of these WU's worth? my GTX285 seems to be doing them in just over an hour each - dont know if thats good or bad!

This may explain the reduced temps, as it's not maxed out at all :(
Either that or there's a bottle neck with the lower spec cards.

Looking at the Riva temp graph the gup core is working in bursts as well as the cpu.

Above was using both cores - With the Affinity set to just cpu1 - higher temps and more 100ppd more

@TomO - my GTX280 gets around 10k-11k mark, but only with the priority adjusted, else it seems to hover around 7k or so. They take about an hour like this.

I must admit i'm hardly seeing any cpu usage - it does alternate between 0 and 2% as far as i can see on Vista64 with the 180.60 drivers. Increasing the priority to normal or high flattens out the GPU temp curve. I dont have rivatuner installed, but i assume that this means the load of the card is fairly even. I'll try and post some screenies later on this evening.

@Happy - yes, i think (in fact, the advmethod thing is listed in the text next to the new scientific cores option). I addd the flag in case otherwise it did not appear on the 'additional parameters' section of FahMon... better to be safe than sorry!

Well, just got back and fired up the old folding box to take some screenies... and my ppd is a little on the low side! The screenshot shows my current FahMon and benchmark scores. Adjusting the priority hasnt really made a shred of difference to points today, unlike yesterday where it made all the difference in the world! I havent put up task manager shots because with the SMP clients running its at 100% all the time, and EVGA precision reads a constant temp of 64C, with lots of fluctuations down to 63.

EDIT: Also visible is a cursed p5102... *shudder*

Just got one of these on my 8800GT, project 5900. Temps are the same as ever, about 58c. Adjusting the priority worked for me. Was getting 4500ppd with it set to low priority; now, with it on high priority, I'm up to 5200ppd. CPU usage is less than 1% on average (quad-core).

I've switched one of my 3 GPUs over to -advmethods but I'm holding off with the other two to see how these new WUs work out.

Unfortunately it seems that i will never see 11k from the card again. A forced core download (v1.24) corrects some science and a stuttering issue, which was pretty bad. It also stops the runaway points...

After finishing a WU5763 and got another wu5900 and can confirm an automatic dowload of new core. No restart, just implemented as part of new wu startup. Not complaining as it adds another 100ppd for me - at 3850 now -
PLEASE NOTE - Priorty resets to low

Edit - Ignore that - just checked the full log file and it's been using ver 1.24 on every 5900 and 1.19 on all the others wu's that I've had the last two days... ver 1.24=core14

ive yet to see any of these new units or the new core
ive re done the config to enable advmethods and applied the -advmethods switch in the startup of each of my clients to see if i get any

I havn't stopped getting them since a couple of days ago :p

Although a weird issue I have been experiencing is that my GPU PPD will drop sometimes down and stay down from about 5000PPD on certain WUs which is to be expected. However the problem is say on a WU that gives 384 points it'll normally run at 5000ish PPD but sometimes drop to anything above 2500PPD :( I have the process running at 'normal' priority. I do use the PC for gernal browsing though, not sure if that's the reason.

Web pages with lots of photos, rapid moving up and down the page etc all cause the gpu client to slow. However, its not as bad as watching an upscaled DVD!

Ah ok, is there a way to change the priority of the FAH GPU client to always be 'normal' not 'low'. I when a WU finishes it loads the next core either 11 or 14, however if 11 finishes and 14 loads and vice versa it defaults back to low. I have to change the priority each time a different client opens, and I can't sit infront of my PC all day :p
