New OCUK X99 Builds - Why MSI X99S SLI Plus?

Hi,

So my Titan Onyx is showing its age, I could upgrade but I feel the urge for a new system. I checked out the new Titan Typhoon and it looks really nice, but whilst reading up on the motherboard, the MSI X99S SLI Plus, a review pointed out that going SLI would obscure both the 1x PCI-E slots making them useless, another concern was the placement of SLI with one card directly beneath the other.

If this is true, may I ask why OCUK choose this motherboard, especially for their SLI build since it seems counter-productive?

Also is it possible when selecting these builds to specify a different motherboard?

Couple of other questions

1. When I bought my Onyx, OCUK provided most if not all the packaging for the various components, motherboard, and GPU at least, along with all the 'extras' that they contained. Is this still standard practice?

2. Is there anyway to know what memory and gpu manufactures are used in the Titan Typhoon and the Storm (though the storm doesn't seem suited to sli) and again can specific manufacture/models be specified when purchasing?

Thanks

Hi

You can select anything you want and then get OCUK to build it for you.

So if you put your own component list together, then you can just post it in the customer services section (Or ring them) and ask for a quote.

You can get the shopping cart plugin which makes it easier to post your parts list from this Forum link - http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18371076&highlight=browser

or if you are using Google chrome - https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/ocuk-shopping-cart-viewer/empfloiadabicdlgahhamannadefhehj

So when you put the parts in the basket you get something like this:

YOUR BASKET
2 x Gigabyte GeForce GTX 970 G1 Gaming 4096MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card £299.99 (£599.98)
1 x Intel 5820K 3.30GHz (Haswell-E) Socket LGA2011-V3 Processor - Retail (BX80648I75820K) £295.99
1 x Gigabyte X99-Gaming 5 Intel X99 (Socket 2011) DDR4 ATX Motherboard £199.99
1 x TeamGroup Elite 16GB (4x4GB) DDR4 PC4-19200C16 2400MHz Quad Channel Kit - Black (TPKD416GM2400HC16QC01) £179.99
1 x NZXT H440 Mid Tower Case - Black £89.99
1 x EVGA SuperNova G2 750W '80 Plus Gold' Modular Power Supply £85.99
1 x Crucial MX100 256GB SATA 2.5” 7mm SSD + 9.5mm Adapter (CT256MX100SSD1) £79.99
1 x Be Quiet! Dark Rock Pro 3 CPU Cooler £65.99
1 x Toshiba 2TB 7200RPM SATA 6GB/s 64MB Cache - OEM (DT01ACA200) HDD £57.98
Total : £1,673.59 (includes shipping : £14.75).

The Gigabyte board looks like it has better spacings for the x1 pci-e slots. You can always ask the Customer Services for their opinion on Motherboard choice before you pull the trigger.

If you know exactly what parts you want, then just start a new thread in the pre-sales section here - http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/forumdisplay.php?f=117 post your basket in it, and then take it from there.

Thanks Lee for your reply.

That is all really good and useful information to me and i'll most likely go that route, once I've decided whether to upgrade or get a new PC.

Still think its odd that OCUK are offering a motherboard that going SLI would appear to prevent any additional cards from being installed though? I wonder can you run x1 in x16 slots? I know you can go the other way if you don't mind the loss in transfer speeds.
