New Oculus to Start Production July 2020

Would be a bit of a u-turn for facebook to start competing again at the high-end. Thought they were all about mass adoption and spying on you when in VR chat:D

I don't see Oculus paying much attention to standalone high end PC VR anymore. My feeling is they're far more focused on creating mobile/portable standalone VR headsets like the quest in the hope the AR/VR glasses or headwear is the technology that will one day replace the smartphone.

It will likely connect to PC but I would expect everything Oculus release from now on to have the ability to function as a standalone device like the Quest. Especially as they clearly want to promote their own store and ecosystem.

Maybe an Oculus Quest HD/Pro is what I'd expect to see? Something similar to the Oculus Quest with higher resolution/refresh optics that is backwards compatible with existing Quest titles seems like the most logical option for them.

I imagine it would be a challenge to get a standalone device powerful enough to drive higher resolution screens. Given a 2070s/2080 struggles on higher res screens, how's a glorified Android smartphone meant to do the business. The only benefit of a higher res Quest would be tethered, so I don't see that happening for a while. More likely smaller, lighter, more comfortable, less front heavy, but otherwise the same?

That could be where their recently shown off AI upsampling could come into play I suppose.

Agree with this but possibly with a slightly higher refresh rate as well?

Higher refresh rate has been rumoured. Apparently the Quest screens are capable of 90hz, but the Quest is only FCC certified for 72hz. If you could run the Quest at 90hz in link mode it'd make it a better PC headset.

Quest main marketing tool is that it is wirefree and does not require a PC. I can't think that any of the HMD manufacturers aren't aware of the big perceived value increase that is brought about by wireless connectivity such as Virtual Desktop is providing. They could continue with touting the quest as totally wirefree, but also include formal support for wireless PC connectivity. This would still be in keeping with the product (always wireless with or without PC). Including support for wifi6 would up the amount of video data that can be received over the current 866mhz limitation of the existing quest.

Marry that increase datarate with a higher framerate / higher resolution and you have a significantly improved product that still sits in the same segment that it was intended.

The issue with streamed wireless VR (even with a dedicated hardware solution) is that it's a big support problem as there are so many variables that can make it go wrong.

Virtual Desktop's creator, Guy Godin, said recently that a large part of his time is taken up with answering support queries for the wireless VR feature.

I've never been able to get wireless to work reliably for my Quest, even when next to the router. Other users have no problems. Any solution Oculus offered would have to be much more reliable.

I think they would probably have to offer a USB dongle preconfigured... that way they have control over more of the variables. Ideally they could offer a more advanced protocol too like WiFi 6 (or even a completely different system to WiFi using higher bands)

Yeah, I mentioned wifi6 in my earlier post. Pre-configured hardware is an interesting idea, but given the price point Quest is aimed at, it might be too costly.

Well a new Quest has been rumoured for some time. Ah General public thanks for beta testing Oculus link, now get the release version of the final product but you have to buy the new Quest first for £499. Kerching. Whats to betting it kills Virtual Desktop, they've already neutered it once but slipped up with it being open source.

A new HMD is set to enter manufacturing in late July, a source told the website. Oculus has yet to reveal official details of the headset, but it's fair to assume it should deliver inside-out tracking and may be a more powerful version of an all-in-one/PC-powered hybrid similar to the new Oculus Quest.
The move comes shortly after Facebook discontinued its mobile-powered Oculus Go headset to focus exclusively on the hybrid Quest and PC-powered Rift.
The new Oculus HMD should be a direct competitor to Valve's latest Index headset and HP's new next-gen Reverb G2 headset.

So that suggests there will be two new headsets, the new Quest and this new Oculus HMD PC headset.
