New office desk

I've bought from them in the past, got a large 80cm by 180cm desk with L attachment 70cm by 100cm. They're sturdy generally have a bar across front edge to provide rigidity and rear edge is supported underneath. Easy to erect standard flat pack chipboard construction. Not exactly pretty though.

I don't know where you are but can I suggest you looking up your local auctioneers and check out their next vintage (or similar auction) very decent pieces of wooden furniture can be picked up cheaply as long as you have the means to transport it. More character less spend and a bit of upcycling to make it your own.

We routinely chuck in very low bids on paintings and antique maps that we like and pick them up for very cheap prices from time to time and the furniture goes cheaply quite often too. You might find something you like.

This is really good to know, I hadnt thought of this!

Typically at auction you have to pay the buyers premium and VAT on top of whatever the final prices is. A common amount for this might be 24% additional to your accepted bid price. You don't have to be there in person and often better if you're not in my opinion. You can place a commission bid. Fill in a form and leave the lot number and maximum bid. Then you can't over bid you've set you limit before auction and you don't have to be there in person. They'll ring you to let you know if you've won and ask you to pay up. It is common for viewings to be the day and evening before the auction, so have mooch and if you like something pace the bid. Many auction houses have online catalogues so you can see if there is anything that might take you interest before you go, no point wasting your time.

For example https://www.rogersjones.co.uk/en/home-contents-and-collectables/375/2019-01-11/lot/14
at my local auction house. It may not be what your after but a little TLC and something like that would be a steal at 30quid.

Interesting - I'm deffo going to look into this. I'd like to try and find a matching pair of something if I can. Thanks very much for the info!

My office literally threw out about 100 of those desks recently... if this thread had been 2 weeks ago I could've given you the location of a skip with a load of them in. Had no idea they were worth so much money or I'd have hired a van and got myself a new ebay store for a short while!

Are you getting confused with corner sofas?

All corners are chavvy no?

OP: I worked as a furniture removal guy when I first moved to London collecting those desks and sticking them in a showroom for sale. They were often marked as £50-£100 depending on condition but the secret was the warehouse behind the store absolutely stuffed with the things that the owners couldn't shift. Eventually he stuck them on Gumtree for £20 a pop to anyone who collects, and this happened very frequently with all kinds of office furniture.

The best part was he owned two businesses, one was office clearance which would charge people to clear out their offices and the other was a shop selling that exact furniture to other people. He was raking it in hand over fist and couldn't sell the stuff quick enough. I got £50 a day cash in hand :p
