I did a roadtrip through Texas and Louisiana last month, mostly spending a day or two in each city. The last stop was New Orleans where I spent 2 nights and I fell in love with the place. I met someone and have been invited over to stay so I'm going back in a few weeks for 5 days.

When I was there I spent most of the time either drunk or driving (notice the OR :p) so I didn't get to take in much of the place never mind the touristey stuff.

Have any of you been to New Orleans and if so what do you recommend seeing or doing? I've done Bourbon street and whilst it was an awesome experience at the time, I've done it and I'm not particularly interested in getting blind drunk again :p
I know there are a million guides and tonnes of information on the net but nothing quite beats first hand experience.

Also, given the sort of weather they get down there, am I likely to experience any epic storms? Don't ask why but storms really turn me on and the ones we get here are rare and crap!

So yeah, I'm just scouting for advice on what to do and where to go. Thanks! :)

So its not under water any more?

No! The bit I was in (the French Quarter I think?) looked untouched. You wouldn't have known a hurricane had been anywhere near it however when we were driving around the suburbs it was quite weird to see so many abandoned houses amongst all the rebuilt ones.

Galveston, TX on the other hand - they were hit by a hurricane last year. If post-nuke Hiroshima was in Texas, Galveston would be it. Jesus it was bad!

Loads to see and do, I was there for about a fortnight (about 10 years ago now but I doubt that much has changed in the main tourist areas).

Of the many things I did/places I went.....
Cemeteries - St. Louis Cemetery No. 1, St. Louis Cemetery No. 2, Lafayette Cemetery No. 1 (do not go to these cemeteries on your own, always go as part of an organised tour. They are safe in a group when with someone that knows their way around but they are a bit of a maze and you can easily get lost and an unsavoury type could take advantage of the situation)
There are loads of Museums and Preserved homes in the French Quarter and the Garden District, I could name them all but I'd be here all day
Steamboat trip on the Mississippi, go on the Natchez (the only authentic steamboat in New Orleans)
The Aquarium of the Americas
Preservation Hall (if you want to take in some Jazz)
Plantation houses (outside NO but there are lots of day trips) - Nottoway, Oak Alley, Destrehan, San Fransisco, Madewood
New Orleans Museum of Art
Superdome
Ghost & Voodoo tours
A ride on the historic streetcar

For food:
Commanders Palace (relitavley expensive but worth it)
Brennan's (get breakfast there at least once)
Remoulade
Ralph & Kacoo's
Cafe Du Monde for the cafe au lait and beignets

There were a lot more places I went but that's a good start :) Of course there is always the casino (Hurrah's) too.... that was only just built when I was there but was too busy to go.

i went a few years ago and hated it. Did Dallas, Houston and New Orleans. Highlight of my trip was the the WW2 museum.

Sounds awesome, I so need to do some travelling.

Thanks for the awesome advice, it was a great help. There wasn't a great deal of time to do everything but we had a couple of days in the French Quarter to do the river walk, aquarium, some of the food joints (Cafe du Monde, Gumbo House, Bennachin...), bars, the streetcar etc...
We also went and watched a Saints game (in my new Saints jersey!) at a bar with some of our local friends which was awesome too. :)

It was so good in fact I'm going back in 2 weeks :D I'll try to tick off the rest of your list Muban! Thanks again :)

Ah, we went down Bourbon street (is that how you spell it?) trying out the clubs. A very drunk mate of mine tried the mechanical bull, then realised that her miniskirt was too tight, so spent about 5 seconds, one hand on the reins and one desperately trying to cover her shame :D

We then went to a strip club (not my fault, everyone else wanted to go in and I didn't want to be a loner) and jeez I have never seen so many implants in one place before. The very definition of a good night

The hurricane season is usually from 1st of June through to the end of November. There are currently no tropical cyclones to be worried about:

I wouldn’t be too worried but keep an eye on weather forecasts if you are.
