New 'Overclocked Bundle' Problems

Built my new system yesterday using the ovelcockers 'overclocked bundle' (Gigabyte UD5/6gb Patriot RAM/ i7 920 D0/ 4.0ghz overclock). I specified the 4.00ghz overclock option, but it is only running at 3.82 ghz? Am I doing something wrong?

Also I have noted many others with the same package stating they have a USB stick with BIOS settings on it or something? I certainly dont have one with my package - is it missing or discontinued? And what if I lose the BIOS settings? My expertise does not match those of overclockers to get them back!!

Also, the 4.2ghs option is an extra £200? Anyone know why? Liquid cooling maybe? Seems a lot for .2ghz and it has me intregued!

I built this system to run Flight Sim a little smoother and as apparently there is not a system out there that can run Flight Sim x at full options, I was hoping to squeeze as much out of this as possible!

Any help for an overclocking newbie fellas - ta!

It might be 4GHz with Turbo mode (try putting it under some load and see if multiplier goes up to 21).

4.2GHz one is presumably far more expensive because not as many chips can do that 100% stable, whereas 4GHz is fairly common.

mmmm - well I guess so - but all 3 options for the bundle give you the same chip -
the i7 920 D0 - didn't realise there were different grades for this same processor?!

Where do I find the 'turbo' setting to see if it's enabled? Is it in the bios.

..... turbo - LOL!

...

in bios go to MB intelligent Tweeker(M.I.T) then Advanced CPU Features then enable the option Intel(R) Turbo Boost Tech.... finally save and exit...

It is the same model of chip, just that some overclock better than others. OCuK test the chips to see which will run happily @4.2 GHz and bundle them as such.

As said by mmj_uk, just download Prime95 and watch the overall clockspeed in CPU-Z, if turbo mode is enabled then it should pop up to the magic 4Ghz.

920's are only rated to run at 2.66GHz as per Intel spec (2.8 with turbo), anything above that when overclocking is a bonus, as with anything else manufactured in mass not all are created exactly equal.

The only reason OCUK are able to offer i920@4ghz is because the majority generally overclock to near that in the first place, some of the better chips will do 4.2ghz so they get sold at a premium.

You're better off just disabling turbo in the bios and setting it at 20x200, I don't even know why OCUK don't do that in the first place.

My bundle of i7 [email protected] does have stable @4.20GHz (all I do is turn on Turbo Boost enabled on, increasing vcore to 1.300v from 1.231 (4.00GHz) as I think I am lucky indeed to have a great cpu processor chip.

But Temp around 83C with 4.2GHz with 60 mins Linx full load.

I think anything under 85C is safe with overclocked @4.2GHz

heres a useful FAQ
if you have any further questions about your bundle - please contact me on the customer support forums or via our system support line where i would be happy to assist you with any queries

1) What volts did OCUK put in your chip? What VID did your chip come with?

chip VID varies greatly - no two chips clock the same and i account for this
if i have to do a lot of tweaking then i put the bios on a 64mb usb pen so the customer has their individual settings as a backup
i use minimal voltage i can find stability at, its all part of the service
i believe that as you are paying for the overclock - my role as the technician is to support the overclock and overclock each bundle as if it were my own system

* Do you know how it is tested? Prime for 8 hours? Have you personally tested prime at the rated speed for 8 hours+?

i test each bundle for as long as i can - some with initial problems are tested overnight [14 hours]
others get the standard 8

* What temps are you reaching idle/fully loaded?
this depends on the end user fitment unfortunatly
load should be around 85 in a good case [with lots of airflow]

* Did any of you have concerns on the HSF fitting in your case and if so did they offer you an alternative at a discount as part of the bundle still? Or you pay the extra on top of the normal HSF?

i have written a guide on the forums for people who are unsure - following this alongside the fitment guide in the cooler should do the trick

*How long did your package take to arrive?

i get most packages done as soon as they finish testing, during busy periods there can be delays, but i try my best to get a good output so that customers wait for minimal time

rjkoneill - would you mind please read my RMA on the customer service forum as you haven't post my AS5 paste yet as a promise from you for over a week now with no paste yet. Many thanks.

hey - thank for the reply fjkoniell!

I never received any usb pen? I will test the cpu under load and Im sure the magic 4ghz is reachable (this will be fun to read in 5 years time when we're all hitting 20ghz!)

will speak through customer support .. jonny

the bundle is a joke mate, I specified 4ghz received a3.8ghz and had to clock it down to 3.2ghz for it to be stable. Too much to ask for I suppose. Oh they'll take the whole lot back and make sure I get a stable one. But what's the point, they don't test them thoroughly enough for it to be a guarantee.

From everything i've heard these bundles are very solid and anyone who has problems gets the customer support they need, i assembled a rig using this very bundle (clocked to 4GHz) just the other day and it worked perfectly.

Don't jump to conclusions, the bundles aren't a joke and i'm sure you will get a working replacement, that's why it's called a guarantee.

Firstly, the chip probably shows as 3.8 in the BIOS, but when it runs in turbo mode it will go up to 4.0.

Secondly, the fact that it's only stable 800Mhz below OcUK's settings suggests that it's you who's doing something wrong. If the max stable frequency really was 3.2, it probably wouldn't boot at 4.0, let alone pass a stability test. What's your cooling like? Are you using a rubbish PSU?

The PSU is a brand new CM 700Watt Silent Pro
The cooling is excellent running clocked at 3.2gig at <40C Idle and <60 load at ambient of 25
The profile was set to 3.8 and standard NOT Turbo (disabled)
I can't be doing anything wrong since the advert says all you need to do pop on the cooler and off you go. Which is precisely what I did. I get what they guy said about the HSF not being sat right etc, and I'm sure that eventually I'll get that 3.8 stable but I paid for a guaranteed overclock to 4.0ghz to get a good chip with a stable overclock, not because I can't overclock it, but because all cpu's are not created equal and I didn't want any hassle. I got neither. I suppose I'm just peeved that they wanted the whole lot back to test and I would have to mess about with couriers etc. Anyway I have vented and don't want to threadjack since the OP's obviosly in the same boat and seeking help.
