Hi

I'm trying to put together a new rig and am running into problems with booting up.

The spec is:

Asus P6T X58, Nehalem 2.93, 6GB Dominator, Stock Fan, BFG 280 1024 OC, 3 HD's with a 150GB Raptor X holding the OS, all in a CoolerMaster HAF.

Everything appears connected correctly and spins up, so I can get into the BIOS and see the 3 HD's all connected, along with the CDDVD and Floppy, so I've set the boot priority and the date.

The Raptor has Vista X64 on it from my old rig (in sig) and a second WD AAKS has XPSP2. My Vista is OEM, and as I've changed the Mobo due to it failing I'll need to contact MS - this may be relevant, not sure.

Only after rebooting I get past the POST, so my two boot options of Vista or XP are listed, but after choosing Vista there appears to be a loading and then a very brief BSOD is flashed up and it restarts.

So, I've changed the boot priority to the CDDVD and have inserted the Mobo's driver disc, only all that seems to do is want me to create a boot floppy.

Where have I gone wrong? what should I be doing?

Ideally I need this sortred for tomorrow so I can RD into the office!!! So many thanks in advance!

Simon.

Just checking - your link points to XP help, and primarily I'm interested in the Vista boot, but I'll try sticking in the Vista disc and attempting a repair of that.

Thanks

Yeah you cant just put an old HDD into a new computer as the primary HDD, you could have it as a secondary one to read from (but not able to boot)
If the repair doesnt work you'll have to format the hard drive and do a fresh install of windows, obviously try and get any personal data off of it you can using your old system first

Is that just a Vista limitation? As I've now been able to boot the XP drive successfully, although I've had to re-register and activate XP.

The Vista repair seems not to work - it wants to perform a restore to an earlier point (i.e. prior to the hardware upgrade). Other than that, it suggests that a component has been changed but can't actually repair anything.

I may try the system restore option just before I commit to a fresh install. Other than software, I've only got Firefox & Thunderbird profiles on this drive so it might be fairly painless..................

Any last suggestions on how to get Vista working?

Thanks

might need a fresh install to resolve the problem

i know changing hds about can break vista, it seems less resilient than xp. it might be due to its inbuilt drm/activation system at work
