Hi I'm buying a new PC as I'm going to university in septemeber doing computer visions and games and want to upgrade my crappy quad core to a beast, i have dead on £1000 to spend (As transferred to my paypal) currently i've got this specs, the bundle specs i will list below if you can't see by the pictures. I have a new keyboard and monitor and im buying a new mouse because my lachesis is dying.

Bundle Specification
- CPU: Intel Core i7 2600K 3.40GHz @ 4.60GHz Sandybridge CPU
- Motherboard: Asus P8P67-M PRO Intel P67 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard ** B3 REVISION **
- RAM: Kingston HyperX Genesis Grey (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C8 1600MHz Dual Channel
- Cooler: Akasa Venom CPU Cooler
- Artic Silver 5 Thermal Compound

This comes to £993 with shipping.

My questions are.. 1. is this pretty good for value for money?
2. will the akasa venom cpu cooler fit in the cooler master case as i've heard its pretty big?
3. if you could suggest changes/builds for under £1000 with better it would be appreciated.

~Thanks

P.S. I don't want/need an SSD I'm happy with a 7.2k I'll wait for the price of them to come down and size to go up before i think about one :)

So what will the main uses be? Gaming? Or will you be doing other stuff as well?

Oh and to answer your question, overclocking these CPUs is easy as pie:)

Well i game a lot, but i may also be doing some rendering/graphics. I don't mind about load times though so a SSD is not needed.

thanks for this, i will consider this, how easy is the 3.4ghz to overclock to the 4.6ghz the bundle offers?

4.6 is nothing. I've got my 2500k overclocked to 4.7 without a problem. You should aim 5 if you're doing heavy compiling etc, all you need to do is increase the multiplier and then steadily increase voltage until you can pass 4 hours of stability test.

EDIT: the power supply linked is an overkill, get one of THESE

Doesn't sound like you'll really need an i7 then.

An i5-2500K is just as good for gaming, the i7-2600K only really offers hyperthreading (which games won't make use of) and L3 cache.

I'd only suggest going for an i7 if your gonna be doing a lot of rendering and stuff, but if your doing a bit, an i5-2500K will be more than enough.

Would you rather keep the cost down or spend the whole lot and get the best and have CF/SLI support for future etc?

Here's a cheaper build (which you could replace the 560 Ti with the 570 or 580 if you really wanted)

Intel Core i5-2500K 3.30GHz (Sandybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor £161.99

MSI P67A-GD65 Intel P67 (socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard - (Sandybridge) ** B3 REVISION ** with FREE Coolermaster Hyper 212 Plus CPU Cooler £139.99

Corsair XMS3 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (CMX8GX3M2A1600C9) £79.99

Total : £743.41 (includes shipping : £13.75)

And here's a more expensive version which will allow you to go SLI in the future without any upgrades:

MSI GeForce GTX 570 1280MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card £249.98

Intel Core i5-2500K 3.30GHz (Sandybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor £161.99

Cooler Master CM-690 II Lite Dominator Case - Black £59.99

Antec Kúhler H2O 620 CPU Watercooler (Socket Intel LGA 775 / 1155 / 1156 / 1366 / AMD AM2 / AM3 / AM2+ / AM3+) £49.99

Samsung SpinPoint F3 1TB SATA-II 32MB Cache - OEM (HD103SJ) £39.98

Cooler Master CM-690 II Case Window Side Panel £17.99

Sony Optiarc AD-5260S 24x DVD±RW SATA ReWriter (Black) - OEM £15.98

Total : £932.87 (includes shipping : £12.50)

P.S No need for thermal compound as it will come pre-applied, but if you really do want some, get some non-conductive stuff like MX-2 or something.

Well i wouldn't mind a bit of future proofing but i doubt any game will require a more advanced system than an OC'd i5 2500k for a few years the main benefit would just be for rendering videos & graphics i guess.

You can see the gaming difference here (and other comparisons on other pages)

At the end of the day it's your money, and you could fit an i7-2600K into either of my builds if you feel you'd need it.

wow i5 actually beats i7 in some games, didn't know the difference was so minimal.. is the antec khuler watercooler enough to OC a i5 2500k to 4.5-4.7ghz without to high tempratures? Also would it fit in the coolermaster case with that mobo?

For nearly every game I play on max settings my 2500k sits at around 45% usage max, so there's no need for a 2600k if you're just gaming. However, the 2600k does have hyper threading which is good for rendering etc.

Yeah the Antec Kuhler will take you to 4.7GHz+ easy peasy! The CM Hyper 212+ will probably just about get you there as well, but your temps will be a bit higher.

The Antec will fit as it's an all-in-one water cooler, so no big HSF sticking out.

Ok well I'm buying your second specs with the sidepanel for the case also the mobo allows to easily overclock correct? As i have no previous experience with overclocking im sure i could look up a guide but word of mouth that its easy will settle my mind :) I have £43 to spare any cool additional features i could buy with that?

Ermmmm, you could upgrade the DVD drive to a Blu-Ray player, if that's your sort of thing, or you could get some extra fans for the case or another fan for the Antec to have a push/pull config or something.

Or just go get drunk:D lol

I didn't include a mouse, so that could be your budget for the mouse.

I added the mouse on, would additional fans be nessescary would they give any cooler temps or is the watercooling enough, btw i appreciate everything you've helped me with a lot.

would this fan be a good addition for the top of my case? http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=FG-056-AK&tool=3

It's all good man, it's why we're all on here lol

This is what it comes with/accepts:

- Front Cooling: 1x 120 mm (17 dBA)
- Rear Cooling: 1x 120 mm (17 dBA)
- Top Cooling: 2 x 140 / 120 mm (optional)
- Bottom Cooling: 2 x 120 mm (optional)
- HDD Cage cooling: 1x 120 mm (optional)

So it will come with the front and rear cooling and then you could get a couple of 120mm fans for 1 or 2 on the top and bottom.

It will keep the air flow better in the case and so will keep your graphics card cooler as well as everything else.

I don't have too much knowledge on fans myself but I'm sure someone will suggest some, and if not you could quickly browse the Overclocking & Cooling section for any similar advice someone else needs.

Just from memory I've seen these recommended a couple of times - Yate Loon D12SL-12

Looking at this review, they look very good for the price too.

Those fans look OK but they will only fit on the top as they're 140mm (which I just realised you already said lol) I can't find any reviews about them but they are rated at a similar dB as the Yate Loons so if they stick to their spec they should be good.

Ok well i read the review and it said they work well with the water cooling, and for that price id be stupid not to buy 4 of them even if i wont use them all i can fit 2 on top 2 and bottom. Also got some mx-2 paste like you suggested overall £980.52 with delivery going to purchase as soon as my money goes into paypal in the coming days thanks a lot.
