I'm lost at Sea, don't bother me.
Hey guys, after lying dormant from the PC world for quite a while I recently bought the components for a new PC from overlockers. I figured that seeing as I used to know how to assemble PCs it would be a piece of cake but this turned out to be a hideously over optimistic assessment of my skills.

These are the parts I bought:

Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 4850 "Toxic Edition" 512MB GDDR3 TV-OutDual DVIHDMI (PCI-Express) - Retail
AMD Phenom II X3 Tri Core 720 Black Edition 2.8GHz (Socket AM3) - Retail
Asus M3A78 Pro AMD 780G (Socket AM2+) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard
Hitachi Deskstar 7K1000.B 1TB SATA-II 16MB Cache - OEM
Antec 300 Three Hundred Ultimate Gaming Case - Black (No PSU)
OcUK 4GB (2x2GB) PC2-6400C5 800MHz DDR2 Dual Channel Kit
Samsung SH-S223FBEBE 22x DVD±RW SATA Dual Layer ReWriter (Black) - OEM
OCZ StealthXStream 600w Silent SLI Ready ATX2 Power Supply

Here's my current problem:

When I turn the PC on I get power and fans whirring, plus some noise from my drives to indicate they are doing something. Apart from that I get bugger all.
I don't get my monitor registering any input signal (currently connected through DVi)
I don't get any kind of nice beeping bootup noises
I don't get any bad beeping indicating something is obviously wrong
I don't get any lights flashing up on my motherboard apart from a big green 'I am currently plugged in' standby light

My first guesses were:
1) Maybe a major component is loose/installed incorrectly - though I've checked plus I would have guessed this would trigger an error code.
2) My CPU is incompatible with my motherboard without a bios update first
3) My PSU is incompatible/underpowered/not connected to my motherboard properly. I was a bit confused when connecting it up as in the past it was just one big lead, however I'm currently setup with the big power input on the motherboard being connected by a the biggest lead I could find plus an extra 4 pin one attached to it. Plus there's an additional 4 pin lead going into a different socket near the CPU.
4) My graphics card is buggered and apart from that my system is working fine. It's worth noting that I occasionally get a little red light on my graphics card, although the only time I can seem to be able to spot it is when I power down. Also the PCI-Express slot has an extra blue flappy bit attached to it which I guess is used to help install/seat the card but I didn't seem to need to use it. It's also worth noting that my motherboard seems to have a basic onboard VGA graphics adapter which I didn't realise at first, however when I hook this up to my monitor I still don't get a signal.
5) My cpu is buggered.
6) I've somehow failed to enable my motherboard onboard speaker, hence I can't hear the error codes.

If anyone has any thoughts or suggestions on the situation it would be greatly appreciated.

hmm, I just tried removing the Graphics card (used onboard vga), memory, hdd and dvd drive. Still no sign of anything going on, if it at least obviously complained at me I would be happier.

I guess I need to try using a different cpu and a different power supply to try to track down the faulty component, this is a pain in the bum

Does that board actually have an onboard speaker? There certainly isn't one in the picture of the board on OcUK.

I don't think the Antec 300 has a speaker you can connect either.

That motherboard does not work with any Phenom II straight from the box, especially yours of the AM3 variety. The BIOS must be flashed/updated before you can work. But I have mo idea if this should stop the PC POSTing or not. But, in my opinion your BIOS is the culprit.

find/borrow/buy some entry level AM2 cpu chuck it in, install an OS then update the bios. should work fine after that.

oh, and for some reason i have noticed that most high-end boards do not come with an on-board speaker. personally i dont see why not since we are the types of users who are going to need it most.

Check for any bent CPU pins while you're at it. I did notice AM3 CPUs are supported from BIOS 0702 onwards (released 24/11/2008), if the board is new I would have thought it would have that version at least.
