Hello everyone I am an IT student about to build my first system from scratch. I have a budget of around £600-650. I already have a monitor, mouse, keyboard etc.

I will need a new case and power supply for this build. Will be used for gaming and uni work (probably more on the gaming side :D )

Would like preferably a 3570K and USB 3 capable case and motherboard. No need for an SSD drive as I will get one down the line. However I would like a blu-ray drive.

Thanks for you help! Also if you have any tips on building my first system please do advise :)

You can use the Win8 release preview for your OS, or as you are a student you can get Win7/8 cheap.

Use the stock intel heatsink that comes with a retail CPU for a safe 4GHz overclock, add a aftermarket heatsisnk later for more:)

Hi and thanks very much for your build suggestion! I have usually stuck to ndvidia cards in the past but would be willing to part with them if I could get a better card. I have been a gtx 550ti how does this compare to the one you have suggested?

As an IT university student we get all windows based software for free (excluding office) which is a great help :)

EDIT: Already signed to dreamspark it's pretty handy :)

thing is, even though the cm silent pro 500 is advertised as 500w, it only delivers 408w on the 12v rail. its more like a 420w psu.
a good 550w psu that can deliver 500w-ish on the 12v rail is good enough, even for a gtx670

Stulids spec was good. Personally I would have used an nvidia 460 rather than the 6870. Maybe the OP will find CUDA support useful on his course? The 460 is heavily overclocked to nigh on 6870 performance. It also has HDAO lighting as an option over the AMD cards.

Nvidia 460 vs AMDs 6870

Not a fair comparison as the 460 is running at stock (675mhz) not the 867mhz the EVGA GPU runs at. So expect much better performance ;)

Having a modular PSU is seriously helpful, especially in midi tower cases. The 550W OCZ ZT would be fine, if you want the 650W I wouldn't blame you. I settled on the Bequiet L8 630W myself as the best compromise for my uses.

Thanks very much to everyone who posted here with builds and advice. Will look at the cards over the next few days and decide which one will suit my needs better :)

Will probably end up going for a 600+ watt psu to try and future proof the system a bit :)
