Hi all

Just built my first PC and having problem with my graphics card. System is:

Gigabyte GA-P55M-UD2 Intel P55 (Socket 1156) DDR3 microATX Motherboard
Intel Core i5 750 2.66GHz (Lynnfield) (Socket LGA1156)
Corsair 4GB (2X2GB) DDR3 PC3-10666C9 1333MHz Dual Channel Kit
OCZ OCZ600SXS-UK / StealthXStream 600W
Asus 1024MB GDDR5 ATI Radeon HD5850 TOP DIRECTCU

When I switch on I hear a very high pitched sound and it doesn't boot. I unplugged the dvd and hard drive so was just running the above. My old xtx1950 works fine in the new pc.

I returned the 5850 thinking it might be faulty but they said it was fine. I'm not technical, this was quite a brave venture for me. Can anyone see any issues with the build?

Any help or advice would be appreciated.

Thanks.

The graphics should work fine with the setup.

Did you plug both connectors in to power the GPU.

Thanks for the reply.

Yes, the 6 pin and 2 pin. I also got a technical friend to connect it and got the same result.

Hmm I'm sure my 5850 takes two 6 pin connectors. You sure 6 and 2 is right?

Think you're right. Its two 4 + 2 connectors. Its best to connect the power to your GPU using seperate rails if you can, not too sure about OCZ PSU, if its modular then you should be able to do this....

Anyhow, yep make sure you've got enough power going to the GPU.

Edit - this might help -

As you can see in the picture, you should have either a 6 or 4 + 2 pin PCI connector and you'll need two of them.

the 5850 takes 2x PCI-E 6Pin plugs

they come in these types: 6pins and an extra 2pin or simply a 6pin plug. (i dont think there are actually 4pin+2pin PCI-E plugs as all PCI-E is 6pin or more...

Please check your card and try again

DO NOT PLUG IN THE MOBO 8PIN PLUG INTO CARD

Yes sorry, I did get that wrong. I know what I meant.:( Sorry, it is 6pin+2pin or just 6pin. As said, don't think 4pin+2pin PCI connectors exists.

I thought the mobo ATX 12V connector was either a single 4pin or with more recent PSU's 4pin+4pin? It is on my PSU. As 8pin ATX connectors are more to do with if your running a quad? Or so I read somewhere.

I know I ran a dual core with a single 4pin ATX for years, then when I went quad I connected the extra 4pin ATX to make it 8pin.

Which is a very good point actually... Have you connected both 4pin ATX connectors to the ATX 12v mobo socket as you've got a quad, might not be getting enough power..

Thanks for all the replies, I appreciate it and I think I understand. For info my connectors are:
The PSU has:
1 x 20+4-pin ATX
1 x 6-pin PCI-E
1 x 6+2-pin PCI-E
The mobo has:
1 x 24-pin ATX main power connector
1 x 8-pin ATX 12V power connector

I think I only connected the 6+2 pins and not both 6 pins. I'll try the above advice tomorrow when I get card back.
