New PC Build - CPU Issue

Hi All

First time posting here so Hello :) to everyone.

So yesterday I received the last two components for my budget home PC build, the CPU and GPU. Popped them onto the motherboard following all the instructions and all wired correctly.

However, when I went to boot up for the first time, the PC just powers on for about a second then goes off and repeats this cycle of ON and OFF until I hold in the power button on the case to switch off completely.

I spent most of last night disassembling the PC and starting from scratch, re-seating the CPU, checking for any bent pins, but the same issue occurred. There is a red led that flashes at the bottom right corner of the MB indicating that the issue seems to be with the CPU. I do have a video of the issue but as I am at work at the moment I can't upload it, will try later at home.

Specs are as follows:-

  • Gigabyte Z390D Motherboard
  • Intel i3 9100f CPU - stock cooling fan.
  • Asus TUF GeForce GTX1650 Super GPU
  • Corsair Vengence RGB Black Pro 16GB DDR4 3000MHz Ram (2x 8GB)
  • Corsair Semi-Modular CX650M ATX PSU

As I haven't built a PC in about ten years I'm at a loss at what the issue could be.:confused::confused:

Make sure the CPU is in the right orientation.. done this too many times haha.

Cant remember if at the bottom right of the board. There's 4 fault LEDs, one for mobo, ram, cpu, gpu . Worth checking .

Yep, CPU in the right way, small arrow on CPU lines up with arrow on MB. Yeah, the four LEDS at the bottom right are for CPU, RAM, GPU, and BOOT. It's the CPU LED that lights up.

What slots do you have the memory installed in?

Also have you tried a CMOS reset.

According the MB manual I have installed them in slot B2 and A2. Tried the CMOS reset by removing the battery and leaving it out for 5 minutes. Still no joy.

It could need a bios update to use that Cpu.

Just checked bios should be fine cpu supported on f1 bios first release.

Yeah, just checked that too.

Try a breadboard setup, with minimal components, outside of the case and jump start the PC by bridging the power pins with a screwdriver.
  • PSU
  • CPU/Cooler
  • GPU
  • 1 stick of memory
  • No drives/peripherals
Test.

Breadboard? New term for me :D. Will have to look that up unless there's a guide here.

It just means build it on the motherboard box with the minimum amount of components installed .

You will have to jump the power switch on the motherboard with a screwdriver or connect it to the case switch.

I don't think your CPU supports 3000Mhz RAM speeds? Although, it should boot fine and just run it at lower speed.

Well Guys, not sure what the problem was but I am typing this from my new PC as we speak/type. :)

Basically I just took it all apart and started from scratch. The only thing I did differently was to clean the thermal paste from the CPU and Fan and add some fresh paste.

PC booted up after a couple of seconds and after installing Windows, here we are.

Thanks for all your help/suggestions. Will continue to lurk on these forum to pick up some more tips. :D:D:cool::cool:

Paste over contacts causing short??

Maybe. I installed the CPU with the stock fan that already had paste applied. Cleaned both the CPU and Fan and reapplied some Artic Silver paste and PC now working.

Just one more thing. I have a 240GB SSD for the OS and a 1GB HDD for storage. Both are SATA connections. Windows can see the SSD in File Explorer but not the HDD. The HDD does show up in the BIOS and in the properties tab in File Explorer itself and shows device is working properly.

First time using SATA drives, last PC I built was IDE cables and jumper pins, so not sure if I am doing something wrong.
