Hi all,

Hopefully someone on here can advise but I’ll give a little back story first.

A week or so ago i specc’d up the parts a pc for a mate who wanted a new pc for gaming.

I’ll freely admit I am a bit behind the times with computer hardware as I have been running a i7 930 2.8ghz since they first came out and haven’t felt the need to upgrade.

So I spent a bit of time helping him spec it up. We went for:
ASUS maximus ROG motherboard - it was the XI with LGA1151 socket Z390 chipset
Intel Core i9 9900k coffee lake
Be quiet dark rock cpu cooler
Nvidia RTX 2080 Ti
2x M2 nvm for storage (Samsung)
Corsair HX750

The PC is running amazing. 3dmark is ranking it in the top 6% of PCs which sounds good to me.

What we have started to notice though is unusually high CPU temperatures. Anything from 40-60c idle on desktop to 60-100c load. Gaming seems to be way over 80c and even 90c (by checking core temp app). To me this seems very hot so I’ve been through the bios tweaking a few settings to see if I can make it better but made very little difference turning off the intel ‘turbo’ feature etc.

I have done some reading on them and a lot of people/forums/reviewers are saying the chip runs hot, obviously recommending liquid cooling etc.

My question is, does this CPU just run hot regardless? In my eyes 50c I have no problem with but over 90 nearly touching 100c during games seems a bit much. However we haven’t seen it break the 100c mark, which makes me think it’s designed to operate this hot.

Blimey that fan installation!

I suspect your issue here is case airflow. The front of your case has very little intake area, even if you do have two fans there. Does it get better with the side panel off? By how much?

The 9900k is a very hot chip but 90+° says to me something's wrong. That's a decent cooler.

You could also check your thermal compound application but I'd point the finger at air first.

Yeah the fan was the most awkward thing. It’s positioned correctly know.

I agree will try re doing the cooler and checking the thermal compound was ok.

You might have got it a bit cooler with the Pro version of the Dark Rock 4 cooler i.e. split heat fins and two fans, that's if it'd fit into the case of course, and clear the RAM although you can fit the fan a bit higher to clear most I think
