Hi everyone.

I'm looking to get a new brand new rig. My current rig I've had for almost a decade now with minor upgrades a few years ago. My main use for the machine will be to game and to also do 3D visualizations in my spare time.

My current rig is:

i5 2500k
16GB DDR2 RAM
AMD HD6830
250GB SSD

My question is really what sort of spec can I get to the best price that will allow me to see a decent performance upgrade for gaming and for 3D rendering? I know for 3D rendering I should use Quadro cards but I'm happy to go with a gaming card for budget reasons. Also as much RAM as possible again for the best price.

Things like SSDs and Case im not too fussed about them being premium. Case wise I'd prefer mATX or even ITX if thats possible. (though I think the lack of DIMM slots on ITX may be a deciding factor).

Any spec suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I'm willing to spend up to £1000 but if I can get a performance upgrade for less I'm happy with that too.

Hi,

Im gaming at 1920 x 1080. I dont plan on gaming in 4k.

Isnt the 3770k an older i7? Wouldnt I be best to get a Skylake CPU to future proof?

According to CPU Boss the i5 6600k is better benchmark wise than the i7 3770kand prices are similar.

Its really the CPU im not sure about, I know getting 32GB DDR4 RAM will be and improvement over my 16GB of DDR2 and the 1060 3GB will be a big improvement over my current 6830.

But im finding on benchmarks the 2550k still performs well against some of todays i5's

Just upgrade that GPU and you will probably be able to ~quadruple your FPS for like £250

I would do that before upgrading the whole system

Would you say its money wasted if I got a new a whole new system?

Would a new GPU 1060 and if I want more RAM (purely for my 3D work) get up to 32GB of DDR3?

I have no idea about your work requirements

But your GPU is absolutely 100% terrible, but your CPU is still good. IMO it would be wise to get a new GPU and see how you like that, then buy more RAM for work if you do, or get rid of the system and move new GPU to new system if your not happy (though I suspect you will be happy from a gaming point of view with just a GPU upgrade)
