New pc build woes

Just built my new pc base unit from scratch with each component being brand new. Had a weird problem with booting as my pc would boot up once, turn itself off after about 3 seconds then reboot again but to a blank screen. Upped the ram voltage to 2.1v like it tells me to on the sticker on the side of my giel ram and im into the vista install now.

Ive read that I cant use all my 4gb until ive updated my vista 64bit with a minor patch otherwise it BSOD's on boot. That true?

Also worried that it'll keep doing this weird double boot up thing everytime I go to use it. Anyone encountered the same problem?

Yes there is an issue with 4GB and Vista64, You leave out 2GB until installed and patched.

I aint tried to install with 4GB apart from my Beta Testing for MS, then its a Slipstreamed CD I use so installs as Vista SP1 RC and never got any issues.

All previous times I was on 2GB.

quote from a mate of mine who had the problem ... hope this helps :)

he also mentioned it was running ok up untill he installed the service pack 1

OK here is the scoop and glad I posted this in the Vista forum as the issue is indeed a Vista issue. There is a kb hotfix for this so other will know I'll post the ordeal.

This only effects Vista users with more than 3 gigs of RAM installed so if you aren't running 4+ gigs then there shouldn't be a need for this. I just installed it and all is well now. The hotfix is kb929777. Below is the link to it. Also you must install Vista (Clean) with 2 gigs to get it to load up and install the OS. Then apply this fix and reboot and then shut down put in your other RAM.

32 Bit systems

64 bit systems

kk thanks, ive downloaded the patch and stuck it on a pendrive so I can install it instantly as soon as im on. Done the same thing with drivers as well hehe.

Using my 74gb raptor as the install drive and a 250gb WD sata drive as the storage disk so hoping the thing should be pretty darn quick!

OKay just installed vista and on the restart I get 'disk boot failure, insert system disk and press enter' :S

ideas?

sorted it, after installing my 4gb of ram the bios changed my FSB from 800 to 816 and it didnt like it lol

all sorted mate, installing games already hehe. Now the only thing I have to do is find a longer screw for my dvd rw to stop it from making a daft noise as it sounds like its vibrating.

Okay the double restart problem hasnt gone away. Everytime I restart my computer it boots then turns off about 2/3 seconds later then restarts after a short pause and works. Ideas?
